Inclusion 2024 Inclusive PE, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Resource for School Games Organisers and School Staff.
This Inclusion 2024 resource is to help School Games Organisers (SGOs) to meet effectively the Inclusive PE, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs of all schools in their area in an efficient and supportive format.
This resource supports the vision that all young people should have access to inclusive PESSPA in the school curriculum and access to meaningful experiences in their local School Games.
SGOs can easily share the resource with their school contacts in their area or school sport partnership.
Schools can then share the resource with colleagues at a staff meeting, email or as a CPD task in directed time using a cascade approach.
This resource can also be used as a curriculum development tool in all schools with a range of approaches designed to facilitate fun, enjoyable and inclusive activities whilst also giving staff the confidence and skills to implement their vision of inclusive PESSPA in their schools.
The Inclusion 2024 CPD resource contains embedded links to inclusive PESSPA webinars, websites, e-learning and staff inclusive PESSPA self assessment tools (such as the Inclusive 2024 Inclusive Education Hub).
The Inclusion 2024 resource also supports completion of the Inclusive Health Check tool on the School Games dashboards as well as supporting individual staff development and the CPD needs of a cluster of schools or a school sport partnership.

What is Inclusion 2024?
Inclusion 2024 aims to increase and improve opportunities for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to engage and participate in physical education and school sport.
Description
The project is funded by the Department of Education and led by the Youth Sport Trust on behalf of a consortium of organisations including Activity Alliance, the British Paralympic Association, NASEN and Swim England.

Inclusion 2024 will work collaboratively with pupils, schools, expert practitioners and local/national partners to drive quality and accessibility of opportunities for SEND pupils to participate, engage and learn through PE and School Sport (PESS).
This programme will work to reimagine the role PESS can play for pupils with SEND, reconnect pupils following the negative impact of COVID, and support active recovery of pupils increasing physical health and social wellbeing.

The programme will:
Improve the quality of schools’ PE and sports teaching and provision for pupils with SEND.
Increase opportunities for pupils with SEND to achieve 30 active minutes within the school dayIncrease the engagement and participation of pupils with SEND with PE and school sport.
Improve the quality of swimming and water safety lessons for pupils with SEND.
Facilitate integration of PE and school sport provision for pupils with SEND.
Inclusion 2024 will be delivered through a nationally recognised network of Lead Inclusion Schools, each recognised for their expertise in engaging young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) to participate, compete and lead through PE, physical activity and school sport.

Alongside providing advice, training and guidance around engaging young people with SEND in PE and school sport, inclusion 2024 will also focus on:Co-designing and creating resources with young people on Inclusive Programmes and festivals of Sport that will build upon the magic of the Winter Paralympics and Commonwealth Games in 2022.
Pioneering school led innovation in School Swimming and Water Safety - working with schools and pools to review and directly enhance swimming provision for pupils with SEND.
Expansion of the successful YST programme ‘My PB’ -
which will see young people with SEND attending Alternative Provision settings, accessing high quality curriculum PE approached in a way that clearly communicates life skills, with each young person thriving and achieving their personal best in physical education, in school, in work, as a citizen and in their personal life.
Sharing practice around Engagement in PE -
With the Engagement Profile now statutory for schools in England, this strand will explore with schools what this profile looks like in the context of PE, and support others with this assessment tool that helps schools meet their duties in supporting pupils who are working below the level of the national curriculum and who are not engaged in subject-specific study.

Inclusion 2024 Inclusive Education Hub

The new Inclusion 2024 inclusive education hub has launched!

Teachers, school staff and other associated professionals can register on the new Inclusion 2024 inclusive education hub here.

Education practitioners across England will have access to all the essential resources for inclusive PE in one space. It is created in partnership by Activity Alliance, Youth Sport Trust and Department for Education. The partners’ ambition is to support more teachers responsible for PE and school sport to engage more disabled students. The impact will mean more young people have accessible, positive, and meaningful experiences that will last a lifetime.

The Inclusion 2024 programme aims to increase and improve opportunities for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to engage and participate in physical education and school sport. The project is funded by the Department of Education and led by the Youth Sport Trust on behalf of a consortium of organisations including Activity Alliance, the British Paralympic Association, nasen and Swim England.

The new free online hub is a result of collaboration with schools, expert practitioners, local, and national partners. It is built based on the growing concern that many disabled children continue to miss out or have negative experiences in PE and school sport.

Findings from the My Active Future report, released by Activity Alliance in 2020, reinforced the activity gap between disabled and non-disabled children. Disabled children are less active than their peers and experience more barriers. Worryingly, the national charity and leading voice for disabled people in sport and activity, found:

One third of disabled children take part in less than 30 minutes of sport and physical activity per day during term-time (30% vs 21% of non-disabled children). Only a quarter (25%) of disabled children say they take part in sport and activity all of the time at school, compared to 41% of non-disabled children.
Disabled children’s activity levels decrease significantly, as they get older. Activity levels for disabled and non-disabled children are similar when they first start school (Key Stage 1 83% during term-time compared to 84%). By age 11, disabled children are less likely to be ‘active or fairly active’ (Key Stage 2 - 77% vs 85%).

The gap widens more significantly by the time they are 16 (Key Stage 4 - 52% vs 72%).

Disabled children are twice as likely to be lonely compared to their non-disabled peers (72% vs 36%). They are more likely to feel they have no one to talk to, feel left out, and to feel alone.

The Inclusion 2024 inclusive education hub allows teachers and school staff to privately self-assess their inclusion of disabled students in PE and school sport. The self-assessment questions explore their approach to inclusion across school leadership and management, inclusive teaching and training, pupil engagement, and extra-curricular provision. Practitioners then receive a personalised report, with advice and useful resources to improve their practice.

The hub also contains additional relevant resources, gathered from across the country and globe. This reduces searching time and gives teachers a ‘go-to’ place for inclusion knowledge. They can also return to the hub to retake the self-assessment in order to continually improve their practice.
