Communities and states across the country are taking legal and legislative action to hold major oil and gas companies accountable for their role in the climate crisis and make them pay for the damages they've caused.
Now, Big Oil and its allies are urging Congress to give the fossil fuel industry total legal immunity from liability and create barriers to justice for communities everywhere. We must stop them.
The American Petroleum Institute — the largest oil and gas trade association in the country and a defendant in several climate accountability lawsuits — has announced that stopping “state climate lawsuits” against fossil fuel companies is a top priority for the industry this year, following reports from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times that highlighted fossil fuel lobbyists’ push for Congress to pass a legal liability waiver for the industry.
It's time to tell Congress: no immunity for Big Oil! Join us in calling on members of Congress to oppose these efforts to let the fossil fuel industry escape accountability for its climate deception and pollution.
We are contacting members of Congress in California, Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington to ask them to support justice and accountability for their constituents.
There is also a national letter for national organizations and for state-based organizations and elected officials that work or live in other states.
