Nicollet Open Streets 2019 Volunteer Opportunities
Nicollet Open Streets is coming to Nicollet on Sunday, September 22nd from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Nicollet Avenue will be closed for motorized vehicles from Lake Street to 46th Street leaving the streets open for community members to experience Nicollet in a whole different way! This exciting event is expected to bring thousands of people to the area to experience the Lyndale and Kingfield neighborhoods.

To showcase our great neighborhoods, there will be a plethora of things going on including art making, yoga, music, food, games, and lots of other great things that will engage and entertain. To pull of this grand event we need your help! There are a number of volunteer opportunities and a number of ways that you can be a part of this amazing new event.

Shifts are for an hour and 45 minutes, giving 15 minutes of overlap between shifts so you can be certain you are comfortable in your role and prepared. Shifts are:
10:30 - 12:30
12:15 – 2:15
2:00 – 4:00

Pick Your Shift from the Following Options
You can choose as many, or as few shifts as you like! We are grateful for your support. Please list in the notes if you'd like to volunteer with a friend, family member, etc... and we'll make sure to post you together.
Help us get the street ready for up to 14,000 community members to enjoy! There are a few key duties with this position, detailed day of. (i.e. unlocking the port-a-potties, helping set up tables, putting out A-frames, etc...)
Race Revelers - FULL THANK YOU
Help community members run their fastest OR slowest race! Part of Nicollet Open Streets will be a Slow Roll, Root Beer Race, and a Run for Beer. Help register and/or check in racers and hype the crowd.
Street Ambassadors (2-4 at each intersection):
These volunteers keep the street “open” and keep cars off the street during the event. Volunteers are needed at most intersections to set up the barricades (first shift only); take down barricades (last shift only); take tallies of pedestrians, bikers and other non-motorists in your section (selected intersections). You will be given instructions and tally sheets for this task. You’ll make sure no cars turn onto Nicollet while the street is closed and will also receive sidewalk chalk to engage guests by adding creative drawings to your intersection and asking event goers to help out!
Green Crew
Part of keeping this event low waste is making sure waste makes it into the correct receptacles. Green Crew will be stationed at intersections that have Compost, Recycling and Trash cans and volunteers will help make sure that neighbors dispose of their waste correctly. Education about curbside composting will also be shared by volunteers, in case participants want to sign up for this free City service!
Clean Up Crew
As the event comes to an end, we'll need a swift crew to sweep the street (not literally) and pick up trash, return materials to HQ, and just generally help return Nicollet to its pre-event glory.
Roving Photographers FULL- THANKS!
Are you an aspiring professional photographer with your own camera? Volunteer to use your photography skills to capture the spirit of Open Streets! While anyone can and should take photos to document the event, we would love to know who will be out and when. Have your photos featured on the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition and Open Streets websites. Roving Photographers also help promote Open Streets MPLS by posting to social media during or after the event.
