ʻŌpio Community Organizing for Change Application
Are you an ʻōpio between 16 and 24 years old, who is interested in learning how everyday people can organize to protect and enhance what makes our Hawaiʻi nei such a special place to call home?

Would you be interested in helping your community collectively ʻauamo kuleana to hold key decision makers accountable to the needs of kaiāulu, ʻāina, and wai?

If so, the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi and Kamehameha Schools' Kaiāulu invites you to apply for an inaugural ʻŌpio Community Organizing for Change workshop series to take place in July through August of 2024!

As we have seen with Kapūkakī and in the aftermath of the Lāhaina fires - as well as in many pivotal moments throughout Hawaiʻi's recent history, from the Sugar Strike to the Kahoʻolawe occupation to the Mauna Kea movement - it is people coming together that has been and will continue to be critical to confronting the institutions, systems, and policies that can continuously undermine our communitiesʻ connections to place, and the foundations of our islands' social, cultural, and environmental integrity.

Learn one of the most powerful tools we have to protect what we love about these islands we call home, and to build a better and brighter future for our Hawaiʻi nei.

Apply below to become one of 15 ʻōpio who will learn the basics of direct action community organizing, including from experienced local community organizers, over the course of seven Saturdays this summer on the island of Oʻahu. Topics will include: Understanding Self Interest, Developing a Strategy, Growing Your Power, Planning Tactics, and Engaging the Media, among others.  There will also be opportunities to apply what you learn in a real-life campaign based on your interest areas.

The workshops will be free and participants will receive a $500 incentive for their full participation.

Deadline to apply is June 23, 2024.

Mahalo and good luck!
