Dear Order of Architects,

I have received your request for the payment of my annual contribution. However, I wish to formally dispute this invoice for the following reasons:

Firstly, I observe that the Order of Architects has for some time now failed to fulfil its basic legal obligations (1). The testimonies collected by the non-profit organisation BAU (2) demonstrate that the Order is not succeeding in upholding the “honour and dignity” of the profession. False self-employment and low wages are widespread. These testimonies also make it clear that the Order is unable to organise the internship in a dignified manner: support, supervision, and evaluation are all lacking. All necessary reforms regarding these issues remain absent.

Secondly, the external service provider Mensura has identified serious structural problems in the Order’s work culture, resulting in an excessive turnover of staff (3). I have also learned that both the President and Vice-President of the Order were removed by a vote of no confidence in the National Council (4). I am surprised that no communication regarding this matter has been issued on the Flemish side, while the French- and German-speaking Councils have already released a press statement.

Finally, as a public-law institution, the Order of Architects fails to provide me with sufficient financial transparency. I must note that the comparative income statements in the annual reports for 2021, 2023, and 2024 consist of blank pages.

I am not convinced that the Order currently possesses the necessary capacity and expertise to allocate my annual contribution effectively in the execution of its duties. I will only be willing to pay my contribution if the following conditions are met:

  • A reform of the internship programme that eliminates false self-employment;

  • Financial transparency: publication of the detailed income statement and annual balance sheet for 2024, and the 2025 budget, clearly demonstrating that the funds are being used responsibly and in accordance with principles of good governance;

  • Resolution of the internal conflict, assurance of sufficient qualified staff, and the appointment of a general director.
