Seattle Mountaineers Trad (Single and Multi Pitch) Equivalency Requests
Please fill out this form if you are interested in completing a Trad climbing equivalency evaluation with the Seattle Mountaineers. This will give you a "Leading Trad Routes" and/or a "Leading Multi Pitch Routes" badge. To receive a rock rope leader badge you also need to take Self Rescue 1 or receive self rescue equivalency. 

Please note this is only for Intermediate Rock equivalency. If you are looking for Basic Equivalency, fill out this form as well. If you are looking for Intermediate Glacier Equivalency, reach out to the WMCR Course Leader.

Skills Evaluated:

Single pitch skills

  • placing trad gear on lead (both active and passive), including an understanding of safe gear spacing, zippering, when to extend pieces etc
  • building gear anchors and anchors for bolted climbs
  • clean and lower off a bolted anchor while your climber keeps you on belay
Multi pitch skills
  • demonstrating a multi pitch transition with your partner (rope stacking, gear swap, tying in to anchor safely etc)
  • building a terrain anchors (like a tree or rock) and being able to clean and rappel from that anchor
  • multi pitch rappel techniques including connecting two ropes for double rope rappels, saddle bags, pre-rigging (stacked) rappels using an extended rappel for your partner
  • belaying from above, lowering from above, unloading a weighted ATC device
General Experience Requirements
  • Single pitch applicants should have successfully led at least 5 trad routes rated at least 5.6/5.7
  • Multi pitch applicants should have swapped leads on or led all of the pitches of at least 2 multi pitch routes, at least one of which should have required gear anchors. Both routes should be at least 3 pitches long. 

You will receive confirmation of the submission of your form and the Equivalency Coordinator will reach out regarding the next scheduled equivalency activity.
