What do I do with the pet?
  • Foster/Holding: If you're able to foster the animal yourself and complete the tasks required to attempt to find the owner prior to keeping or rehoming the pet, that's fantastic! Please note - if you wish to hold the animal at home, you must still work with the local animal services. You must make a good faith effort to find the owner by actively searching (posting ads, checking for a microchip, etc.). In South Carolina, the required minimum holding period is: A)With a microchip or other form of identification: 14 business days. B)Without a microchip or other ID: 5 business days
  • Surrendering: If you are unable or unwilling to foster this pet, please reach out to local shelters and rescues who may be able to assist. Veterinarians typically are unable to take surrendered animals, so it's best to utilize the resources the rescues and shelters provide when able.
  • What if this pet is suffering? Unfortunately sometimes pets are found and owners cannot be contacted or found prior to the animal needing immediate veterinary care. Per SC law, animals that are irremediably suffering due to serious injury or disease may be humanely euthanized sooner, upon a determination by a licensed veterinarian, to prevent unnecessary pain.
What now?
  • Notify the Authorities: Per SC's laws, you must, within 24 hours, notify the local animal shelter or animal control agency in the county where the animal was found. (This is primarily so that if an owner goes to the shelter looking for their pet, the shelter can direct them to you!)
Social Media:
We are lucky in Columbia to have many facebook groups dedicated to reconnecting lost pets with their owners. Here are a few.
