Schoolhouse-KWiK is a UofT In-House tutoring research program that matches high-achieving UofT students (tutors) with struggling Grade 4-9 students from the Toronto District School Board. The foundation of the program lies in Khoaching with Khan Academy (KWiK), which leverages Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) platforms, such as Khan Academy, to improve personalized mastery learning and math performance.
Previous evaluation of the KWiK program showed that elementary students with teachers randomly selected to receive program assistance did significantly better on standardized math tests compared to teachers who did not receive help. While successfully raising average performance, the study also revealed a wide variance in CAL practice time within and across treated classrooms. This implied that KWiK proves beneficial for most classrooms, but is not a blanket solution for all types of students in the classroom. For students with foundational weaknesses, who progress at a slower pace, or need additional guidance, supplementary measures are essential. After-school virtual tutoring, facilitated by you through Schoolhouse-KWiK, serves as an ideal platform for these students. It fosters an environment conducive to productive learning and offers the valuable practice time they require.
Schoolhouse-KWiK has a clear objective: to provide targeted support and guidance to students who face challenges in grasping mathematical concepts covered in their curriculum. Through individualized attention, tutors play a pivotal role in nurturing proficiency among these students, empowering them during a crucial phase of their growth.
All sessions are conducted virtually on a computer, using Zoom. The number of students you will tutor will depend on your availability and preferences. You will be provided the flexibility to determine when your sessions are hosted between Monday to Friday from 3:30-9PM EST. Once you've submitted the form, you can expect to receive
- 2-hour asynchronous training
- information for a quick background check that should take less than 10 minutes
- log-in details from kwik@utoronto.ca
- meeting link and learner information to begin tutoring as early as October 9th
For your involvement, you will earn CCR credit, a reference letter from principal investigator Philip Oreopoulos, an honorary certification, and a chance to win a $5000 honorarium lottery. This is your chance to make a genuine impact while gaining valuable experience.
