🔸Seminar program
The seminar will consist of two lectures:
Yad Vashem Online Sources for Researching the Fate of Holocaust Victims (Dr. Serafima Velkovich, Head of the Family Roots Research Section, Yad Vashem Archives).Â
Over 4.9 million of the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators are commemorated in Yad Vashem's online Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names. This lecture will demonstrate how to use the database for educational purposes, providing practical guidance for research. The lecture will also introduce other Yad Vashem online resources, including the Righteous Among the Nations Database, the Documents Archive, and the Photo Archive. Additionally, it will explore key research projects such as Transports to Extinction and Killing Sites in Eastern Europe.
Jewish Cemetery: How to Use It as a Historical Source (Alexandra Fishel, Educational Projects Officer, ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative).
Although the devastating events of the 20th century, culminating in the Holocaust and the destruction of thousands of Jewish communities, forever altered the fabric of European Jewry, its material history can still be found in many cities and towns. One remarkable fragment of this heritage is the Jewish cemetery—a rich source of texts and even works of art that can shed light on communities that might otherwise be entirely forgotten. When approached correctly, Jewish cemeteries can also serve as valuable learning material in schools. During the session, the ESJF educational handbook Jewish Cemeteries in the Classroom will be presented, and the basics of inscription reading will be introduced.
