In 2020, residents won closure of the South Philly oil refinery that was making a profit poisoning the community for 150 years. Now the new owner of the land (Hilco) has created a “green” community-oriented image in order to race through the approval process for their “Bellwether District” redevelopment. With government support, Hilco has started construction of their polluting warehouses before the clean up has started while ignoring community demands for the project.
This is a historic violation of Environmental Justice.
If the government won’t do its job to hold corporations accountable, it’s up to the people. The Agency welcomes anyone to join who believes we have a responsibility to achieve true EJ at the former refinery land. We take nonviolent, disruptive action until all EJ violations are corrected. Once corrections are made - the land is cleaned up, the community has a say - we will grant the project our EJ permit to build. But until then: no justice, no peace.
Use this form to sign up to join the agency. You will be on the list for meeting announcements and information from the EJ Agency! No experience required or expected: all you need is to be fired up to make sure big companies aren't allowed to flood our neighborhoods or pollute our air :)
