    Short Answers

Early in the book, after Moishe the Beadle escapes his execution, no one (including Elie) believes his tales. Even when the Germans arrive in Sighet and move all the Jews into ghettos, the Jewish townspeople seem to ignore or suppress their fears. "Most people thought that we would remain in the ghetto until the end of the war, until the arrival of the Red Army. Afterward everything would be as before. The ghetto was ruled by neither German nor Jew; it was ruled by delusion" (p. 12). Using the above information and what you know already to explain TWO (2) DIFFERENT reasons why the people were deluded, or in denial, about the possibility of something horrible happening to them. Explain one reason in each of the following text boxes. Each answer should be a few COMPLETE sentences. Points will be deducted for sentence fragments or answers that do not sufficiently explain your thought process.
