Firebird Theatre Summer 2020 Season Assistant and Internship Application
Thank you for your interest in our Assistant/Internship program at Firebird Theatre. We look forward to hearing about your qualifications and interest in becoming a part of the workshop and/or main stage musical staff during the 2020 season. Please fill out the following information to be reviewed by our Board of Directors. Applications will be accepted until Sunday, February 9. Almost all of these assistant and intern positions are paid a stipend, however our Junior Internship positions for high school students who are looking to gain experience in our program are considered to be a volunteer, intern in training experience.

Firebird Theatre is committed to providing quality, educational theatrical experiences for young actors in the area. We strive to not only give them invaluable experience and instruction in acting, singing, and dancing, but to make them well-rounded students of theatre by learning how to build a character, analyze a script, and to create a theatrical world. Theatre teaches our kids teamwork, confidence, empathy, and makes them better citizens.

We select shows that will feature a large number of our actors, provide a fun yet challenging experience, and tell a compelling story. Our workshops and main-stage musical reach a large local audience and all play an important part of our ambitious summer season by giving opportunities to our young actors to be featured in age appropriate productions with their peers.

In general, we offer kid‘s productions for actors ages 7 to 12, and junior productions for actors ages 12 to 18, unless the casting requirements call for an expanded age range or have specific age limit restrictions. Our introduction to musical theater classes are for actors ages 4-7. All of these workshops hold auditions on the first day, and all roles are cast from within the enrolled workshop actors; our interns and staff members are selected to teach, they do not perform in these workshops, allowing the children to shine in all of the leading and supporting roles and the ensemble.

Please note the dates and locations of each workshop and consider the challenges and opportunities that each of those venues present when applying to participate: Arcola Intermediate School, The Colonial Theatre and Phoenixville Area Middle School.

MAIN STAGE MUSICAL:

WORKSHOP ASSISTANTS AND INTERNS up to age 22 ARE WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR MAIN STAGE MUSICAL, AS PERFORMERS, AND WE INVITE YOU ALL TO AUDITION IN APRIL! There are no conflicts with main stage musical evening rehearsals or performances and any of our workshops.

Our main stage musical is a full length Broadway musical, and features a live orchestra, consisting of adult volunteer musicians from the community as well as high school and college students. Our main-stage production rehearses in the evenings only, allowing the participants of our workshops and workshop staff to perform in this production, including college age students, up to age 22. We strive to include as many actors, musicians, stage crew and backstage volunteers as possible, to make this a true community theater experience for everyone involved. Main stage is also unique in that it is cast by open audition and offers roles to the widest age range, from elementary school up through college aged students. The younger age limit has varied depending on the casting requirements of the production.

Main stage musical auditions and callbacks take place in April. Evening rehearsals begin on May 11 and occur three times a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday) until July, then we add Wednesday evenings for the final two tech weeks. We begin rehearsals off-site at Barkley Elementary School for several weeks until we can begin to utilize the Phoenixville area middle school stage in mid June.

Main stage Performances are Friday (evening) and Saturday (matinee and evening) over one weekend in July at the Phoenixville Area Middle School auditorium. Attendance at rehearsals for the two weeks prior to our performances are considered mandatory.

Technical crew/Design Team applicants: The set design and set construction for the main stage musical is the anchor for all of the other productions taking place at our Phoenixville Middle school venue. The sets at Arcola and The Colonial Theatre will present additional opportunities for designers. We are seeking a dynamic, creative team of designers well versed in sets, lighting, sound, detail painting, building, carpentry, costumes, and more who are ready to meet the challenges and opportunities to create all of these enchanting worlds, from Geppetto’s toy workshop, to Baron Bomburst’s castle, the merry old land of Oz, to the African plains, Harvard Law School and a Monster Cabaret!

Firebird Children’s Theatre is committed in all areas to providing an environment that is free from harassment. This policy is intended to cover all student participants, performers, volunteers, employees, contractors, and anyone else working with the Firebird Children’s Theater. Harassment based upon an individual’s sex, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion, or any other legally protected characteristics will not be tolerated. All participants, employees, volunteers, supervisors, contractors, and other management personnel are expected and required to abide by this policy. No person will be adversely affected in employment or participation in Firebird Children’s Theatre as a result of bringing complaints of unlawful harassment.

Sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advance or conduct that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive workplace or atmosphere. It includes behavior of a sexual nature that is unwelcome and offensive to the person or persons it is targeted toward. Examples of harassing behavior may include unwanted physical contact, foul language of an offensive sexual nature, sexual propositions, sexual jokes or remarks, obscene gestures, and displays of pornographic or sexually explicit pictures, drawings, or caricatures. Use of the Firebird Children’s Theatre computer system for the purpose of viewing, displaying, or disseminating material that is sexual in nature may also constitute harassing behavior.

If any individual, including but not limited to employee, volunteer, or student performer, feels that he or she has been harassed on the basis of his or her sex, race, national origin, ethic background, or any other legally protected characteristic, he or she should immediately report the matter to his or her supervisor or instructor. If that person is not available, or if the individual feels it would be unproductive to inform that person, the individual should contact the Firebird Children’s Theater personnel responsible for human resources as soon as is reasonably possible. Once the matter has been reported, it will be promptly investigated and any necessary corrective action will be taken where appropriate. All complaints of unlawful harassment will be handled in as discreet and confidential a manner as is possible under the circumstances.
Any individual engaging in improper harassing behavior will be subject to disciplinary action, including possible termination of employment and/or participation with the Firebird Children’s Theatre.
Firebird Children’s Theatre reserves the right to photograph and videotape programs and participants for training, advertising, or any other lawful business purpose. We also reserve the right to change, withdraw or modify courses of instruction at any time and to withdraw any intern/assistant whose conduct is deemed detrimental to our program.

Firebird Theatre is committed to promoting the social, intellectual, and artistic development of all individuals. As such, Firebird Theatre has a zero tolerance policy and expressly prohibits conduct it considers harmful to our students and community including, but not limited to use of e-cigarette products, smoking, use of alcohol, drugs, bullying, disrespectful behavior to fellow staff members or students, not limited to but including on social media, or engaging in any other behavior it deems harmful to the individual student or the Firebird community.

I understand and agree that any violation of the above policy for myself or other intern or student will result in immediate disciplinary action which may include temporary or permanent dismissal from interning or participating in workshop, classes, and any productions. All disciplinary actions taken are within the sole discretion of Firebird Theater. As an intern, you are required to monitor and report to your supervisor any behavior deemed inappropriate based on this policy.

All applicants 18 years of age and older must have a current (within 5 years) State and Federal Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Fingerprinting at the time of interview. If you are selecting an Arcola site workshop, you will also need a TB test.
