Diversifying Journalism - Newsroom Staff
We are three journalists (Sely, Ana, and Jasmine) trying to amplify POC voices in U.S. newsrooms.
People of color make up 40% of the U.S. population, but represent a far lower share of the staff in most newsrooms. According to a 2019 RTDNA survey on diversity in local television newsrooms, only 26% of employees and 17% of news directors were people of color. Meanwhile, in print and online publications, 17% of the staff and 13% of the leadership identified as POC, according to a CJR report in 2018.
We are compiling an online database of POC newsroom staff across the country. Our goal is to connect job seekers with employers, mentors with mentees, and identify future newsroom leaders. The database will eventually be available on our website. We hope this will be a first step in broadening the landscape of journalism.
The only criteria is that you self-identify as POC and you have a minimum of five work samples.
