UMTC Education Abroad Network Spring Meeting
Spring UMTC Education Abroad Network Meeting
Student Mental Health Concerns and Study Abroad
Tuesday, May 7, 2019
2:30-4 p.m.
402 Walter Library, East Bank

How can we support students with mental health concerns as they prepare for a study abroad experience?   How does the Learning Abroad Center prepare students to ensure that mental health needs will be met while abroad? A successful experience abroad requires proactive preparation, which includes completing health information forms and encouraging disclosure. During this interactive session, the Learning Abroad Center will share what is already in place and how can we work together to support students through effective referrals and sharing of resources.

Questions
--What are advisers hearing from students with mental health concerns who are considering going abroad and how are they responding?
--How does a student disclose a mental health concern to the Learning Abroad Center?
--Will disclosing a mental health issue prevent a student from studying abroad?
--What resources are available to support students before they go abroad?
--What type of support is available while abroad?
--How can we work together to better support students?

Following brief presentations, and audience Q&A, we hope participants expand their comfort level in discussing mental health abroad considerations with students.  All faculty and staff are welcome to attend.
