Soccer for Peace - 2020 Tournament Registration
Soccer for Peace
The Soccer for Peace tournament organizers are a diverse group who are both soccer enthusiasts and supporters of the newcomer community in Winnipeg. This group includes Immigration Partnership Winnipeg, the Manitoba Major Soccer League (MMSL), Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, the Aurora Family Therapy Centre, the Winnipeg Police Service, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P), the University of Winnipeg Recreational Services, the University of Manitoba Bison Women's soccer team, and the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's soccer team.

We were brought together through the vision and leadership of Omar Rahimi, who founded and coaches the Liberty F.C. soccer club, a team made up of newcomer young men (17 - 25 years old) who came from war torn refugee backgrounds and who have a great passion and talent for the game of soccer. Players come from a diversity of places including Somalia, Eritrea, Iraq (Yazidis), Nepal, South Sudan, DR Congo, Syria, and Thailand to name a few!

Goals for the Tournament:

1. Raise funds for adult immigrant, refugee, and low-income soccer players - including for the Liberty F.C. soccer club and for a new bursary for low-income players throughout the Manitoba Major Soccer League

2. Raise awareness of refugee issues

3. Build bridges between diverse communities in and around Winnipeg
