Random Coffee is a simple idea* where colleagues from across the university are paired up at random each month to meet for a coffee (or another drink) and a chat.  The idea is that this will get us connected with people we wouldn't necessarily meet through our day to day roles, helping us to make connections and to understand more about our colleagues and the different areas of the university.

There's some more information below, and if you're interested in being paired up for a random coffee then complete the form and we'll get back to you soon.

* the original idea, known as 'randomised coffee trails', was developed by Nesta - the innovation foundation.  For more information see https://www.nesta.org.uk/blog/institutionalising-serendipity-productive-coffee-breaks

Random Coffee was launched at SHU in September 2018. Through a survey in December 18 staff rated Random Coffee on average 4.5 out of 5. More details from the survey are available at https://tinyurl.com/SHURandomCoffeeFeedback

How does it work?
If you're interested in joining in you just need to complete the form below to sign up.

Every six weeks participants will be randomly paired up and will receive an email informing them of their pair. It is then up to participants to arrange to meet each other for half an hour to an hour for a coffee and chat at a convenient time and location.

Pairings are made every six weeks. Please sign up by midday on 30th March 2020 to be included in the next pairings.

Random Coffee is a commitment of up to an hour every six weeks.  We ask that all staff who sign up commit to the meeting to avoid disappointing the other member of staff you have been paired with. However we appreciate that circumstances change so if you wish to leave Random Coffee at any point you can do so by emailing !Random Coffee (ideally before the deadline above)
What should we talk about?
That's up to you. The aim of random coffee is to get us talking to different people across the university and making connections. You could talk about what you do at SHU, what you enjoy about your role, work you've been involved in or things you're interested in .....it's just about meeting new people and making conversation.
What if I'm paired with someone I already know or work with?
Because the pairing is made randomly this could happen (particularly if you know lots of people at SHU), but you can still meet and take the time to have a coffee and a chat, and then in the next month you'll be paired with somebody different.
