Nominate the Mercury 13
We, the undersigned, support the nomination of the First Lady Astronaut Trainees (FLATs), commonly known as “the Mercury 13”, for the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor. The bravery and perseverance of these 13 women in psychological and physical experiments that were also conducted on the first male astronaut candidates, should not be forgotten. These women believed in their abilities and prepared themselves to break into a male-dominated arena, even after the privately funded testing program was cancelled. Additionally the struggle of the women to achieve equity in NASA’s very young space program contributes to our view of women’s history today. Thus, the story of the FLATs continues to be compelling and timely.

Senator Stabenow's office (MI) is collecting nomination letters and circulating the idea among other representatives, so please feel free to contact yours. Name, affiliation, and email are required to complete this form, but only the name and affiliation will be forwarded to the Senator's office.
