Task Five: Read the text about the mystery and choose the best answers to the questions.
The Ocean X team was in the Baltic Sea looking for wrecks. They put the equipment into the water and started searching. They had been doing this for less than an hour when they went over the site of the anomaly. The sonar operator remembers this strange thing turning up on the monitor. His initial reaction was to say: “Hey guys! I think we have a UFO here!”
1. How long had Ocean X been searching the place where they first saw the anomaly?
Less than an hour
About a day
One week
Many weeks
Clear selection
After returning to Stockholm, the crew studied the images for weeks but they just couldn't figure out what the anomaly actually was. After many days and nights spent pondering, they looked in another direction for help. They wanted to go public with images of the anomaly, so they called a newspaper in Sweden. The story became massive with organizations in many countries picking it up and showing the images.
2. What was the first organization that Ocean X team told about the anomaly?
The Swedish Navy
The CIA
A Swedish newspaper
An American news channel
Clear selection
After a year of analyzing, researching and sponsor hunting, the team returned to the mysterious object. The expedition required state-of-the-art technology and mountains of supplies which was all very costly. The budget was set at a hundred and twenty thousand Euros. Every day had a price tag of more than twenty thousand Euros which meant they had less than a week to succeed.
3. How much was the budget for the expedition to see the anomaly?
70,000 Euros
100,000 Euros
120,000 Euros
170,000 Euros
Clear selection
There are many ideas about what the anomaly might be. The most common theories that come from people around the world can be divided into three main categories: extraterrestrial, man-made or natural phenomena. The idea of intelligent life-forms existing somewhere the universe is not inconceivable. Visitors from other civilizations is an intriguing belief and the similarity with a flying saucer is obvious when looking at the smooth shape of the anomaly.
4. Which of the following is NOT a theory that people have suggested for the anomaly?
Extraterrestrial
Man-made
Plane wreckage
Natural phenomenon
Clear selection
The man-made theory is also very common amongst the Ocean X team. Some people refer back to the mythical underwater city of Atlantis and some think it's a submerged Stonehenge. There are other findings around the world that are difficult to explain. For instance, outside Japan, there are enormous underwater structures that look man-made. Other theories suggest man-made structures like the circular Russian warship built in the late 1800s or even the mysterious Nazi Flying Saucer.
5. Which country built a circular warship in the late 1800s?
Japan
Russia
German
Sweden
Clear selection
The last of the three most common theories is that the anomaly is a natural phenomenon. Either its structure was caused perhaps by a gas pocket or a volcano throwing up lava which consequently created the mystical anomaly. There are also several theories claiming the anomaly to be a meteorite. Meteors are sighted every now and then and there are many well-known craters around the world. This could this explain the weird shapes and black stone that surround the anomaly.
6. Which possible natural reason is there for the anomaly?
An underwater earthquake
Dead sea animals
Underwater plants
A volcano

Task Six: Sam is asking Jennifer about the mystery. Choose the best answers for Jennifer.
Sam: Which two countries is the Baltic Sea anomaly between?
It's very interesting.
It looks like a UFO.
It’s between Sweden and Finland.
Clear selection
Sam: How deep under the water is the Baltic Sea anomaly?
It's about the same size as a jumbo jet.
It’s about 90 metres deep.
It's at the bottom of the sea.
Clear selection
Sam: How big is the Baltic Sea anomaly?
It's circular in shape.
It was found in 2011.
It’s about 60 metres across.
Clear selection
Sam: What do geologists think that the Baltic Sea anomaly is?
They think that it’s a natural rock formation.
They studied samples at the university.
They know a lot about rocks and soil.
Clear selection
Sam: Do you think the Baltic Sea anomaly is a UFO?
She doesn't really know what it is.
Yes, because its shape doesn’t look natural.
They have lots of videos of it on YouTube.
