About Camp Lucy

Camp Lucy is a FREE 10-day learn-to-row camp for girls, inclusive of non-binary, trans, and gender non-conforming youth, that uses rowing as a way to learn social-emotional skills and life skills. Camp Lucy uses fitness and interactive activities to help campers learn about themselves as individuals and as part of a greater team. As Camp Lucy participants learn to try new things, they will gain an "I Can Do That!" mentality, and recognize the many ways that they are strong, powerful, supported, and brave!

Camp Lucy is designed to intentionally increase access to rowing for those populations that have been historically excluded from rowing, in particular girls, people of color, and those facing socio-economic barriers. We would like to prioritize registration for campers in 2 or more of these demographics, but will welcome other campers who are interested as capacity allows!

Lunch, snacks, and t-shirt provided.

Necessary transportation support and additional gear available upon request.

Who is Camp Lucy for?

Camp Lucy is for middle school aged girls, particularly girls of color and/or those facing socio-economic barriers to rowing participation.

Camp Lucy program activities are a best fit for students who will be rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders during the session, however we encourage graduating 8th graders who are excited about the program and identify with the demographic we are hoping to create access for to register! Our primary goal is to reach youth who would uniquely benefit from this type of opportunity. Camp Lucy is an inclusive space and welcomes non-binary, trans, and gender non-conforming youth.

If you have any questions about if your student would thrive at Camp Lucy, reach out to us at camplucy@pocockfoundation.org. To learn about other opportunities for youth learn-to-row camps this summer, please visit www.rowhere.org.

What's included and what's not?

Included for all campers
  1. A Yellow Camp Lucy t-shirt
  2. Snacks and lunches for every day of Camp Lucy
  3. All equipment and supplies needed for camp activities

Included for some campers

1. Transportation
  • Limited transportation support is available for campers who do not have another way to get to and/or from Camp Lucy! Please consider all your camper's options prior to requesting Transportation Support as we have limited funds and want to make sure every camper can get to camp reliably and safely!
  • We will finalize transportation plans once we understand the needs of the entire group. Please fill out the questions during registration with your transportation requests and you will hear from a Camp Lucy staff member prior to the start of the program.

2. Additional workout gear
  • We have a supply of additional sportswear for campers who need clothes to row in. Please review the Recommended Rowing Attire section below before requesting additional gear.

Recommended Rowing Attire

Participants will take part in indoor, outdoor, and on-water activities at Camp Lucy.

Rowing does not require special clothing, however it is recommended for comfort that campers wear clothes that have a little bit of stretch! Suggested attire is fitted or semi-fitted breathable clothing that does not restrict the participant’s movement. Denim is ok, but something stretchier will likely be more comfortable. Campers should wear socks and enclosed footwear to be able to participate in all activities. A spare change of clothes are highly recommended in case camper's get wet during our summer fun activities!

Cultural Attire: If your camper wears hijab, headscarf, or other cultural attire, we can help them navigate keeping loose fabric out of the equipment in the boat! We also have a small supply of Nike Sport Hijabs available for any camper who would like one.
Safety

General

Safety is always our top priority. During camp, all participants and coaches will wear Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), and campers will be instructed on how to move equipment safely and take care of their bodies during physical activities. Coaches will drive motorized safety boats, called launches, that are equipped with safety supplies such as additional flotation devices, safety blankets, and first aid kits. The strain of the physical activity will be easy to moderate, and each participant will be coached at the level appropriate for them. We know that learning new things can be scary, and we're here to help and make sure it's fun for everyone.

Weather:

Summer can be a tricky time in Seattle, especially as smoky conditions become more common. Wind and boat traffic can also be unpredictable, and impact our ability to get out on the water. Please be advised that we may need to cancel, postpone, or alter the Camp Lucy session if weather conditions disrupt our ability to transport athletes safely to camp, run a safe camp session, or provide a positive experience. In the event that we do cancel, we will give as much notice as we are able.

COVID

As an organization, we monitor the risks of COVID transmission in our programs. We understand that COVID remains a risk to our community and that our Camp Lucy participants fall into an age category that has had limited access to vaccines. We are not currently requiring vaccination or masks to be worn during Camp. We support athletes and families who elect to wear masks while at our partner boathouses and encourage all families to make the best decision for their camper.

We WILL require all masks to be removed during the water-portions of our programming, as having material over the mouth and nose is a hazard in the event of an emergency. It has been determined that the risk of transmission is low while rowing.

We reserve the right to change these policies at any point prior to or during camp. All decisions regarding COVID prevention or mitigation practices will be communicated promptly to Camp Lucy participant families.

Frequently Asked Questions
I'm not sure if Camp Lucy is for me based on the demographic information above. Should I sign up?
  • If you aren't sure if you identify as a marginalized gender, a person of color, or someone facing financial barriers, you may not be who Camp Lucy is for, but don't worry! - you can learn about other ways to row at RowHere.org and even apply for financial aid at www.pocockfoundation.org/scholarships.

Do I need to take a swim test or know how to swim?
  • Nope! Camp Lucy requires life jackets for all participants and coaches whenever in or around water, regardless of swimming ability. Some camp days may include swimming in the lake as an activity option, and campers and staff will be required to wear life jackets for this activity as well.

I'm not sure about my summer availability but I'd like to try to attend Camp Lucy, what should I do?
  • Please register and mark your certainty of availability within the registration. We are going to manually move people into sessions based on preference, proximity, availability, and capacity. We will be keeping all other names on the waitlist to be contacted when news spots open!
