GiGS is open to all students, but is dedicated to assisting first-generation, historically underrepresented and undocumented students. Mentees are UC Berkeley juniors and seniors who work with graduate student mentors throughout the academic year to learn about graduate school, complete graduate application materials, and develop goals for post graduation plans. In addition to graduate student mentorship, GiGS mentees attend the weekly GiGS Soc.198, 1 unit, P/NP.
As a GiGS mentor you may be working with 2-3 first generation college students who are unfamiliar with the path to graduate study. Mentors meet with mentees at least 3 times per semester and maintain responsive email correspondence with mentees. Thus in many cases, graduate students will provide a holistic mentoring experience to encompass more than just academic advice.
Deadline to apply is: Friday, August 16, 2019Selection notifications will be sent out the first week of September. Participating mentors will receive a $500 stipend per semester.
