Help Restore the Chinese Mission Hall

The historic Chinese Mission Hall in Frederick Street, Wellington, was built in 1905 as a gathering place for the Chinese community. It has been strengthened, and the owner is preparing it for sale.

The Seyip and Tung Jung Associations are exploring the purchase and restoration of the Hall so that it can once again serve as a living Chinese community centre. It would be a place where Chinese culture could be practised, shared and passed on through Chinese language classes, social gatherings, seniors’ activities, mahjong, tai chi, calligraphy, exhibitions and the preservation of Chinese New Zealand history.

Further information about the proposed purchase, governance, funding and operation of the Hall is available on our project page:

This form seeks expressions of support and indicative financial pledges. A pledge is not immediately payable and is not legally binding. Contributors will be contacted before any payment is requested.

If the purchase proceeds, donations will be collected through an approved charitable entity. Eligible donors will be issued donation receipts so that they may claim any available tax credit or deduction.

Major donors, families and sponsors may be recognised within the restored Chinese Mission Hall. Recognition arrangements will be discussed individually with those concerned.
