DATES
The 2017-18 cello master class will be taught by Paul Katz, founding cellist of the Cleveland Quartet and faculty, New England Conservatory on Monday, Dec 11, 2017, 4-7 pm.
Nominations are due Oct 27, 2017.
Auditions will be held Sunday, Nov 12, 2017 beginning at 1:45 pm.
ELIGIBILITY:
To participate in Handler Master Class auditions, nominations of students must be approved by their private teachers. In other words: teachers must tell parents of the students that it is okay for them to submit a nomination via this online form.
Handler Master Classes are open to pre-college musicians from a wide range of ages and levels of training. The criteria for selecting participants include good preparation, serious dedication, and the ability to respond to suggestions in a class situation, whether the student is performing a standard concerto or a piece from the beginning repertoire. Students chosen to perform must be New Jersey or Rockland County, NY residents and must be studying privately at a school or studio in New Jersey or in Rockland County, NY. Students currently enrolled in the preparatory division of a New York or Pennsylvania conservatory are not eligible to participate, unless they are also studying privately at the Thurnauer School of Music.
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
• Beginning Students: one memorized piece with which the student feels comfortable
• Intermediate and Advanced Students: Two contrasting selections of the teacher’s choice.
(One movement of a concerto or a sonata would constitute a selection.)
Repertoire must be memorized, except for cello sonatas.
PIANO ACCOMPANISTS
For auditions: An official piano accompanist will be provided by Thurnauer, but rehearsal time may not be available. Students may play with their own accompanist for auditions only, but not for the master class. For students using the official piano accompanist, please make sure to bring a copy of the piano score to the audition.
For master classes: the JCC Thurnauer School of Music will provide the accompanist for all master classes. Students selected to participate in the master class must send a copy of the piano accompaniment part in advance to the school and will have rehearsal time with the pianist prior to the master class. Under certain circumstances, an outside accompanist may be allowed to play in the master class, at the discretion of the Director.
