Groundwork Lawrence (GWL) is accepting applications for the Summer 2019 Green Team. The deadline to submit applications is March 15, 2019 at 6:00pm.

Who We Are
Groundwork Lawrence’s (GWL) mission and operations are based on the understanding that environmental conditions are linked to the economic and social health of a neighborhood. Therefore, GWL is committed to “changing places and changing lives” through on-the-ground projects that help to transform local communities.The Summer Green Team supports Groundwork as a leadership development and employment program that offers part-time PAID positions for high school students from Lawrence to help lead and learn about local environmental and health issues, conduct research, raise awareness, challenge their peers to do community service, and participate in hands-on improvement projects throughout the City and beyond.

Time Commitment:
The Green Team members will be scheduled to work From Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm with some weekends. Green Team members will work about 24 hours per week including 6 hrs of un. Green Team members will also participate in unpaid field trips to do environmentally enriching activities. The summer program runs from June 25, 2019 to August 11, 2019.
What You Will Do
GWL is seeking high school aged young adults from Lawrence, MA to help lead and learn about local environmental and public health issues, conduct research, raise awareness, increase access to fresh food, and participate in hands-on improvement projects throughout the City of Lawrence. The Green Team Summer Program is a 7-week part-time job opportunity for 30 high school students from Lawrence to join one of three crews:

So Fresh - Costello Farm: Urban farm and food initiatives.
So Green - Den Rock: Trail maintenance and invasive species removal at Den Rock Park.
So Green - Greenway: Trail maintenance and invasive species removal at Ferrous Park and along the Spicket River Greenway.

Along with the primary focus, each crew will spend time working in parks, on the farm, facilitating enrichment and educational programming for local youth, and taking field trips beyond Lawrence to interact with other organizations and communities engaged in environmental and agricultural work. Each crew will also have the opportunity to attend at least one outdoor adventure. Application Process:
Applicants are required to attend a mandatory group interview at Groundwork Lawrence’s office, 50 Island Street Suite 101, Lawrence, MA. We will take time to conduct individual interviews with you during this time too. If you are offered employment, you are required to attend Parent/Guardian Orientation at Groundwork Lawrence’s office, 50 Island Street Suite 101, Lawrence, MA. Our start date for those who are hired will be June 25, 2019. Important: Hold all of these times in your calendar.
• Schedule: Tuesday through Friday with some required overnights and weekends
• Required - Groundwork Greenway 5K – August 11th, unless traveling to Yellowstone
• Work shift: 9:00am – 3:30pm (including a 1/2 hour unpaid lunch)
• Over the 7 week period, The GT schedule includes 140 paid work hours at $12.00 per
hour and 28 unpaid volunteer/service hours. Bi-weekly paychecks may fluctuate
based on the breakdown between work and volunteer hours.

So Fresh- Costello Farm
- Urban Farming: Learning how to grow a garden
- Community Gardens: Supporting Costello Farm
- Farmers Markets: Managing and selling produce

So Green- Den Rock
- Trail mantenance: Maintain trails, trash, dead fall and debris
- Park maintenance: Maintain park resources, boardwalk project, signage
- Park Outreach: Organize a community event at Den Rock

So Green- Greenway
- Community Outreach: Work with the Rec Program to support our
(Green Team and theirs) programming
- Park and Trail Maintenance: Maintain the 5K trail, trash, dead fall
and debris pickup.
- Greenway 5K (Fun Run): Promote and run a fun run at the 5K

Minimum Qualifications
- Have an interest in the environment, natural history, outdoor recreation, park
clean ups, healthy food, and/or community engagement
- Must be a resident of Lawrence, MA
- Must be at least of 14 years old and we encourage youth to apply through their senior year
- Ability to work Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:00AM - 3:00PM.
- Be able to balance the demands of a paid job with your other summer responsibilities.
- Commit to participation for the duration of the program (June 25, 2019-August 11, 2019).
Opportunities for Travel
Green Team members will also have the opportunity to apply for a work trip to Yellowstone National
Park, Glacier National Park or Grand Tetons National Park. Dates are to be determined.

Informational Sessions
Two sessions will be held during the application process to provide information to parents/guardians and their youth. We will cover information on Groundwork Lawrence and the Green Team program, and provide an opportunity for parents/guardians and applicants to ask questions. The sessions are on the following dates:

• March 6, 2019: 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
• March 9, 2019: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Summer Camping Trip
The camping trip will be at Harold Parker State Forest at the end of July(dates to be determined) The trip is mandatory for all Green Team members. Canoeing and hiking will be included in the camping trip.
Service Requirement:
Green Team Members are also required to complete a minimum of 28 additional hours through volunteering and field trips. Service hours are integrated into each GT cohort’s weekly schedule. Volunteer hours and field trips are coordinated by GWL staff and GT members will receive supervision and transportation for all volunteer hours.

While our organization is deeply committed to urban agriculture and the environment, we do not require Green Team Member candidates to have experience in these areas. We seek candidates who are open to learning and engaging with the Groundwork Lawrence mission.
