Current Volunteer Roles:
Wednesday Tree Caller (Portland only)
Join us on Wednesday evenings to help grow greener neighborhoods by calling our ‘treecipients’ to help them pick out new trees for their neighborhood tree planting. You’ll learn about the different types of trees available through our planting programs, and how to help neighbors navigate the FOT website and tree ordering process. This is a social role, and friendly customer service is key. This role comes with an orientation and we ask that volunteer commit to at least 3 Wednesday event shifts.
Planting Crew Leader
This is a hands on, technical role best suited for someone who loves teaching others or simply wants to become more experienced with planting and caring for trees! Crew Leaders attend a training in the fall to learn proper planting technique and how to guide volunteers during planting events, before heading out to at least 4 planting events during our planting season. We are training for both our Neighborhood Trees (urban, residential) and Green Space (parks, natural areas) Programs. Our next training is on Sat, Jan 28th for our Green Space Program and will be held in Tualatin, OR.
Friday Event Prep
Friends of Trees hosts anywhere from 2-5 planting events on Saturdays every week. Therefore, our big prep day is on Fridays and volunteers help us get everything ready for the weekend. If you have a morning free (~9:30-12:30) or and afternoon open (~1pm-4pm), please let us know and we'll follow up with details about our needs. Tasks range from inside organizing tasks to outside moving and loading of trees, wood stakes, shovels and more. Volunteers on Fridays must be comfortable with moving an lifting heavy objects (the trees!).
Monday data entry support
With hundreds of volunteers supporting Friends of Trees' planting events every weekend, we have a lot of data-entry to get to on Mondays! Attention to detail, basic computer skills, and stamina for repetitive work are key to this role. No experience necessary, just a willingness to learn our system and work as a park of a team for our weekly data-entry grind. Shift is 9:30am - 12pm on Mondays.
Pick-up Truck Driver
Owners of pick-up trucks are invited to assist our Saturday morning planting events! Our trees won't transport themselves to their new homes and your pick-up truck is a valued resource. Drivers help us by transporting trees, tools, and supplies along with a team of trained volunteers and planters. Open-bed trucks and trailers are best - trees are tall!
