아트선재센터는 2024년의 첫 번째 전시 《댄 리: 상실의 서른 여섯 달》와 더불어 작가와의 대화를 마련했습니다.
댄 리는 화이트 큐브 미술관을 유기체가 탄생-확산-죽음에 이르는 순환 과정을 관찰할 수 있는 생태 시스템으로 전환합니다. 이를 위해 작가는 곰팡이, 효소, 영혼과 조상과 같은 "비인간 행위자"와 협업합니다. 작가는 흙, 꽃 버섯종자와 같은 자연적인 재료를 사용하여 대형 설치 작업을 제작하고, 전시 환경과 기후, 그리고 설치 요소의 생물학적 구성에 따라 작품이 반응하고 변하는 모습을 보여줍니다. 댄리의 작품에 등장하는 모든 생명은 부패와 발효, 즉 삶과 죽음의 사이클 안에 놓이는 것입니다.
베를린을 기반으로 활동하는 댄 리의 한국 첫 개인전 《댄 리: 상실의 서른 여섯 달》은 개인적인 경험과 한국 전통 문화에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 제작한 신작을 선보입니다. 작가와의 대화를 통해 그의 연구 과정, 그리고 이에 따른 전시 과정을 확인해보실 수 있습니다. 뉴욕의 뉴 뮤지엄에서 선보인 개인전을 비롯해 카네기 인터내셔널, 싱가포르, 비엔날레 등에 참여한 국제 미술계의 라이징 스타 댄 리와의 대화를 나눌 수 있는 기회를 놓치지 마세요!
작가 소개
댄 리 (Dan Lie, b. 1988)
인도네시아-브라질계이자 베를린에서 거주하며 작업하는 댄 리(b. 1988)는 이주와 퀴어 연구를 바탕으로 작업하는 작가이다. 그는 생태계를 구성하는 상호 의존적인 교류와 자연스러운 변화의 주기를 찬미하며, 인간과 인간의 주체성을 탈중심화하고자 한다. 댄 리는 박테리아, 곰팡이, 식물, 동물, 광물, 영혼 및 선조와 같은 “인간이 아닌 존재들”과 함께 작업하면서, 장소와 시간 특정적인 작업을 진행한다. 댄 리의 생태계는 변형, 부패, 진화하는 물질들을 시각화함으로써 다양한 존재들 간의 밀접하면서도 포괄적인 공존을 강조하고, 우리의 살고 죽고 분해되는 과정에 대한 공통적이며 지속적인 참여를 인정한다.

Join us for an engaging talk program featuring the artist Dan Lie!
Lie transforms the museum’s white cube into an ecosystem where organisms cycle through birth, proliferation, and death. To achieve this, they collaborate with “other-than-humans” such as fungi, enzymes, spirits, and ancestors. The artist uses natural materials such as soil, flowers and spores to realize large-scaled installations, revealing specific ecosystems reacting and changing based on the exhibition environment, climate, and biological constitution of installation elements.
The year 2024 marks the third anniversary of the death of Lie’s father. Lie reinterprets the three-year mourning period (samnyeonsang) in Korean funeral rituals, using materials such as sambe (hemp cloth), straw, and onggi (Korean earthenware) to illustrate their own methods of grieving through processes of decomposition, growth, fermentation, and annihilation. As a trans-nonbinary artist, Lie has focused on rotting and fermentation as key themes harboring the potential for transitions that transcend binary oppositions between life and death or humans and non-humans.

About the Artist
Dan Lie (b. 1988)
Born in Brazil and currently based in Berlin, Dan Lie is a trans-nonbinary artist that demonstrates how abjection can be a tool of subversion and expansion. Their practice celebrates natural cycles of transformation and the many interdependent exchanges that structure ecosystems. A fundamental aspect of Lie’s practice is their desire to develop works which de-center human agency and subjectivity. Working in collaboration with forces they term “other-than-human beings,” such as bacteria, fungi, plants, animals, minerals, spirits, and ancestors, Lie creates site- and time-specific works that can be experienced through multisensory channels. By giving visibility to materials that morph, decay, and evolve, Lie’s ecosystems highlight the intimate yet expansive coexistences among diverse beings, acknowledging our shared and continuous participation in the processes of living, dying, and decomposing.
