Spring 2017 - STEM Afterschool Tutors

STEM Afterschool is a project-based science enrichment program for 3rd grade students at Plummer and Nalle Elementary Schools in DC’s Ward 7. Tutors with the STEM Afterschool program are responsible for co-faciltating hands-on, project-based science and engineering explorations for groups of four elementary school children.

The purpose of the program is to increase youth’s interest in and engagement with STEM topics, expand students’ awareness of STEM careers, and improve students’ academic performance in science and math coursework. In addition to time spent at site and site preparation, tutors are responsible participating in field trips and enrichment activities and for attending workshops on campus throughout the semester to better hone their tutoring/mentoring skills, as well as deepen their understanding of the social context in which the program operates.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

- Facilitate a small group of tutees in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering lesson plans in .
- Participate in a weekly tutor meeting to prepare for the upcoming lesson plans, debrief the previous week's site, discuss any program needs, preparation for the upcoming week's lesson plans, and additional training and team building.
- Attend a minimum of three CSJ workshops or Social Justice Week events (Please note that events are often in the evenings).
- Attend scheduled field trips, math and science expos, and campus visits with your tutees.

Program Options:

STEM Tutors
- Teach science, math, technology, and engineering concepts through fun and engaging hands-on projects.
- Meet on Monday/Wednesday OR Tuesday/Thursday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. Must be available for both paired days.
- Take attendance, give thorough explanation of the daily lesson plan, deliver materials as needed and collect materials at the end of period for review
- Assist tutees with any difficulties regarding STEM Afterschool lesson plans and course work.
- Conduct parent/guardian phone calls to review the tutees progression within the STEM Afterschool Program
- Collect up-to-date parent and teacher information, become familiar with the site administrators and STEM Afterschool classrooms that are assigned
- Report a daily review of each tutee’s strengths, weaknesses, needs and any further information that may be necessary

Jr. FIRST LEGO League (Jr. FLL) Tutors
- Teach engineering, math and simple robotics with LEGOs
- Meet on Friday afternoons from 3:00 to 6:00pm

- Assist tutees with any difficulties regarding STEM Afterschool lesson plans and course work.
