Survey of Language Use & Background Information
Sacred Heart Mosman, with the support of the Sydney Catholic Schools Office, is undertaking a process to collect information about the language diversity of the students at Sacred Heart School Mosman.

There are many benefits to learning another language including:
● Communication: your child learns to communicate in another language and develops an understanding that there is more than one way to interact with people.
● Academic: your child learns about how languages work and their literacy skills are enhanced because a clear link exists between learning another language and literacy development in English.
● Critical thinking: your child's analytical skills are increased along with their ability to transfer skills across languages.
● Cognitive: your child's problem‐solving skills are enhanced along with thinking laterally and working collaboratively.
● Personal: your child's self‐confidence, self‐esteem, resilience and tolerance are increased.
● Cultural: your child develops an understanding and respect for other cultures, people, their ideas and ways of thinking.
NSW Department of Education, 2016

In order to gather information about the language use of our students, you are asked to complete a Language Survey. The purpose of this survey is to collect information about our students' language experiences. This information will contribute to the development of a Whole School Profile of English Language Proficiency (WSPELP). This survey will need to be completed on each of your children.

This is a very important process for our school and we appreciate the time taken to enter this information about your child or children. When answering these questions, we would also appreciate that they are answered to the best of your knowledge and with honesty. Gathering this information will only enhance the richness of our school community and teaching and learning at Sacred Heart School.

Could you please complete the online questionnaire and supplied . Furthermore, if you have any questions about the language survey, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
