Theme: Longing for the Savior

A longing for the Savior implies that we recognize the emptiness in our lives that only Jesus can fill.  There must always be a certain emptiness, because the moment we think the hole has been filled, we begin to believe that we no longer need God.

How do we fill the emptiness of our lives with things that lead us to Jesus or away from him?

Theme: Chosen People
As God’s Chosen People, we are uniquely called to a higher standard, not to be superior, but to be a beacon of light.  Our distinctiveness is not to set us apart, but to draw others to The Way of Christ.

How can we, as God’s Chosen People, live out our faith in a world that often does not share our values? We can take comfort in the fact that God is always with us, guiding and supporting us in our journey.

Theme: Incarnation
God became fully human.  He did not simply “appear” to be human as if it were some disguises.  The Incarnation challenges us to see the face of God in ourselves and in every human being, regardless of their identity or background.

Who are the people in whom we have a difficult time seeing the face of God?  Can we start by acknowledging that even they are loved by God as much as we are, and that it's a challenge we can rise to?

Theme: Conversion
Sin was never part of God’s plan. We veered off course when our first parents—Adam and Eve—chose to go against God’s plan. However, Christ’s coming is a powerful reminder that we can always return to the path of righteousness, setting aside whatever does not reflect the Image and Likeness of God in which we were created. When was the last time we celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation? If it has been a long time, what is holding us back from seeking God’s grace through this significant and transformative Sacrament?

Theme: Peace — The Song of the Angels
Peace is not so much the “absence of war.”  Despite our best efforts, we will never be wholly rid of war, violence, or division.  Peace, instead, is the constant awareness that even in dark days God is always at work.  When we lose sight of God, we lose peace.

Amidst all the turmoil that often surrounds us, what steps can we always take to keep sight of God’s face?

Theme: Nostalgia — Longing for Home
Nostalgia comes from a Greek word that means “longing for home.”  In this case, the home we long for must be God’s eternal home.  We are not there yet, but we ought to have a daily desire to get there.
How badly do we want to reach heaven, and what are we doing now to ensure we get there?

Theme: Joy
Like peace, joy is not the absence of struggle in our lives. There will always be challenges, some of which might seem too heavy to bear. However, joy is that unwavering awareness that there is purpose in our lives whenever we live for God rather than for ourselves.

When others observe us, do they see a person radiating with joy or someone who has lost their way?

Theme: Mary’s Womb
Church buildings have oftentimes been symbolic of Mary’s womb because in it dwelt the Body of Christ.  When gathered in a church building, the Body of Christ—the Church—is given birth once again when told at the end of Mass to go out into the world to fulfill the work of salvation. This work of salvation involves not only spreading the teachings of Christ but also living a life that reflects his love and compassion.
Mary, in her divine role, gave birth to Jesus, the Savior.  Do we, as believers, recognize and embrace our own divine calling to participate in the salvation of souls?

Theme: The Christian Family
As Christians, there is something that sets us apart even more because of our faith in Jesus as the Christ.  We must be the examples that we want others to follow. We must be Jesus for others—willing to love, willing to suffer, willing to die, and willing to give life.

Has anyone ever told you that you were like Jesus for them?  If not, what steps do you need to take to communicate God's love more clearly?
