Parent Request Form for Anticipated Absence
As a school, we believe that student attendance in classes and school events is key to learning and student achievement. However, we understand that unforeseen circumstances, family responsibilities and religious observations arise in which students must miss school days. The CAG attendance policy takes this into consideration. Students’ regular attendance and participation is a shared responsibility between the home and school. Parents and students must take measures to avoid excessive absences, and parents are responsible for communicating with the school about the absences. We ask that you carefully consider this, especially in light of other possible unexpected absences that your child may have for the remainder of the school year. We appreciate your collaboration and support of school policy.

In making this request I understand the following:
1. Absence from school may affect my child’s education negatively. As a parent, I will take responsibility for the academic achievement of my child as a result of accumulated absences.
2. It is my responsibility, as a parent/guardian, to inform the Section Principal at least 5 school days prior to the date of my child’s absence. If I fail to inform the school of my child’s absence, then the school will not provide opportunities for make-up work.
3. The school does not distinguish between “excused” or “unexcused” absences.
4. My child will miss valuable class instruction and possibly assessments, projects and homework assignments during the absence. My child will be responsible for submitting all assigned make-up work according to a time-line established by the teacher or grade level team of teachers. The Principal or his/her delegate will notify the teachers of the upcoming absence.
5. Missing the Trimester Exams due to reasons other than illness or family emergency will result in a grade of zero for the assessment in the Middle and High School Sections. Students in the Elementary Section who are absent during the last full week of school due to reasons other than illness or family emergency will receive a grade of zero for any work that is missed at that time.
6. Absences beyond the 10% of the total number of school days allowed by the American School of Guatemala will result in required recuperation work for the class or grade level at the end of the school year.
7. Absences beyond the 20% of the total number of school days allowed by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education for any class will result in a loss of the right to take the final assessment at the end of the year and a zero recorded as the grade.
8. Absences associated with school-sponsored activities or as result of representing Guatemala are not counted against the student’s attendance record.
*If applicable, I will be sending with this notification the letter from the national federation that my child will represent during this absence. This is required for the school to determine the nature of the absence.
