University of Maryland Baltimore City Master Gardener Application- 2026 Intern Class
The primary purpose of the Master Gardener program is to educate Baltimore City residents about safe, effective and sustainable horticultural practices that build healthy gardens, landscapes, and communities. With that goal in mind, annual educational and volunteer obligations must be fulfilled to obtain and maintain your Master Gardener Certification.

1. Class Schedule:  An initial in-person class will be held January 2026 at the Cylburn Arboretum classroom, located at 4915 Greenspring Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215. Further classes will be held on Zoom from 6-9PM every Tuesday, beginning February 3, 2026 and continuing through May 5, 2026.  No class will be held during Spring Break. There will also be several in-person training classes, with locations, dates and times to be decided.

2. Cost: A $275 fee covers the Master Gardener handbook and course-related materials. Full payment is due at the first class in January.  Sliding fee scholarships are available for those who qualify. Please let us know if you would like to apply for a scholarship, and we will put you in contact with the University of Maryland Extension Director for assistance.

3. Interview: All applicants will be interviewed by Baltimore City Master Gardeners as part of the application process.

4. Background Check: Applicants accepted into the Master Gardener program must undergo a background check conducted by the designee of the University of Maryland Extension. The cost for this service is $15 and must be paid by the applicant.

5. Final Exam: All participants in the Program must complete a final exam to qualify as a Master Gardener Intern.

6. Requirements to successfully complete the Baltimore City Master Gardener Program are as follows:
  • Attend 75% of the classes.
  • Complete payment for the Course and the background check;
  • Achieve a 75% score on the Final Exam;
  • Complete 40 volunteer hours during your first year as a Master Gardener Intern to become a certified Master Gardener.  In order to remain a Certified Master Gardener, you must log 20 hours of approved volunteer work and 10 hours of continuing education each year. We will forward invitations to attend training sessions and participate in volunteer activities throughout the year to help you meet this requirement, though volunteering with other BCMG-approved organizations is also acceptable.
