PART B – Measuring coral reef health - Essential Coral Reef Variables
This questionnaire will be used as inputs to the GCRMN strengthening process, and in particular at Town Hall Meeting at the ICRS: Coral reef reporting - from science to policy. 22 June 2016 – 19:30-21:30; Room 301B

Purpose of the form

This two-part survey seeks to gather information on the next generation of variables we should be reporting from coral reefs. This information will be used in the context of a proposal to strengthen the GCRMN and build capacity for a coral reef marine Biodiversity Observation Network.

Data from this questionnaire will be used at a Town Hall workshop at the ICRS (June, Hawaii) to gather feedback from the coral reef science and conservation community, and subsequently to identify elements for scoping for a coral reef ‘biodiversity observation network’ or BON at the GEOBON Open Science Conference (July, Germany). Thereafter the information will be used in setting out a work plan for strengthening the GCRMN to be undertaken during 2017-2020.

Responses entered before 15 June 2016 will be included in the ICRS Town Hall meeting, but the survey will be kept open after that until 31 July 2016.

Instructions
Part A has 4 parts, and will take about 10 minutes to complete:
(1) Personal information (if you don’t want to be identified, enter a dummy name)
(2) Data sharing and use
(3) Your assessment of components of the GCRMN as concept/pilot/mature
(4) Open comments/suggestions

Part B should be filled multiple times for as many variables as you would like to respond on. It may take 5-10 minutes for one variable:
(1) Identify potential Essential Variables (EVs) for coral reefs, indicating the current status of their observing systems.

If there are non-applicable questions or questions you do not wish to answer, please disregard and continue to the next. A partially completed survey is still useful.

PART B: ESSENTIAL CORAL REEF VARIABLES

Please use the same name/email as you used for Part A and all variables entered in Part B, so we can link your responses if necessary.

3. Have you filled out Part A?
Identifying Essential Variables for Coral Reefs
Objective is to receive suggestions and baseline data on potential EBV/EOVs
In this part, please identify important variables you think should be reported/aggregated for coral reefs, across the following six classes identified by GEOBON.
4. Measurable variables that correspond to EBV
Your answer
5. Description (20 words)
Your answer
6. What are the primary units (and options) in which this variable is reported
Your answer
7. There may be multiple ways to report a variable and/or sub-variables. Please describe alternatives to this variable, sub-variables, or supporting variables needed to calculate/use it.
Your answer
8. What EBV class does it belong to?
9. Which are the major taxonomic group(s) covered (tick all appropriate)
10. What aspect of reef dynamics does this variable show that is important?
