We coordinate a 3rd year unit in first semester involving real (designed by industry) formulation projects involving surfactants. These authentic projects allow students to learn and apply their knowledge and develop teamwork, communication and problem solving skills and, most importantly, communicate with Industry mentors in a professional setting.

We would love to have you involved in this unit as we rely on our industry partnerships to run this important unit. Therefore, if you have one or more projects that involve formulation work or solving current formulation problems, or if you want to do some more fundamental research on the role of surfactants in a formulation, you will benefit from a group of 5 students working for a semester on your project(s). Some times it works out that more than one group works on a project. In the past two years some very interesting results were generated for our industry partners highlighting the mutual benefit of the scheme.

On day one, groups of five students are presented with the projects by industry mentors. The students choose their project (with limited direction from the academics), conduct a literature search and write an introduction defining the context of the project. With this and the list available of excipients (supplied by you), student draft an experimental protocol detailing all the material and methods they will want to use in their experiments. The experiments are run over three or four weeks. Results are collected, analysed and interpreted and the final assessment consists a written report and a group oral presentation to mentors in June.
