Charitable, loyal and compassionate are attributes tantamount of Carol Karlene McCalla. Affectionately known as Merty, Carol was born in Kingston, Jamaica, August 20, 1957. She was the beloved daughter of Alpehus and Keturah Morrison. Carol was also the darling twin to Jennifer Dawn Morrison. Carol resided in the town of Sligoville for most of her primary years. Upon turning 12, her family transitioned to the United States. Despite the distance, Carol remained connected and dedicated to her Jamaican roots and community.

While in America, Carol soared academically, personally and professionally. She graduated from Waukegan High School in 1975 and launched her career with a prominent pharmaceutical company, Baxter, which was later changed to Cardinal Health. Carol grew her career to becoming Team Supervisor over production and quality control. While functioning in this role, Carol launched a successful Jamaican restaurant - Caribbean Grille. Entrepreneurship was always her passion. Carol was a phenomenal chef. She enjoyed cooking and wanted to share the Jamaican cuisine throughout the northern suburbs of Chicago.

Though she resided in Illinois, Carol would often travel back to her native home where she cared for her senior parents and tended to the family’s land. Carol was known to cook for many within Sligoville. She donated her time, resources and money to those residing in the parish of St. Catherine and beyond. Carol was a staple throughout the Sligoville and Chicagoland communities. Her home was frequently the place for fun times and family gatherings. Her passion for cooking and appreciation for her culture was adored by many. She was highly esteemed as a mentor, counselor and dear friend.

On February 22, 2009, Carol Karlene McCalla passed away after a long battle with sickle cell. Carol was a fighter. Her faith gave her the determination to fight beyond what Doctors estimated her total lifespan. Carol loved to see people thrive in life. As a mother of four, she was a demonstration to the possibilities when one executes tenacity and fortitude towards a goal and a dream. Our family has decided to launch this honorary scholarship to further the legacy of Carol K. McCalla. She worked relentlessly to support and encourage everyone to strive for their fullest potential. Cooking was her joy and Jamaica was her one love. This opportunity is an extension of her dream becoming another’s reality.

Scholarships may be used for funding related to current enrollment by the student. Students may use the scholarship funds to help cover the costs of tuition, fees, books, room and board, computers, health insurance, study abroad and other college related expenses.
