Minorities In Aquaculture Summer 2025 Host Farm Application

We’re excited to announce the opening of the 2025 Minorities in Aquaculture (MIA) Internship Program! 

As a valued partner, we invite you to apply to be a host farm/location for the upcoming summer or fall internship cohort. If you’re receiving this email, it’s because you’ve either been a previous host farm and expressed interest in continuing our partnership into 2025, or you’ve already reached out to us and confirmed your commitment to being a host farm. 

The nonprofit organization, Minorities in Aquaculture (MIA), has a mission “to bridge the gap between minority individuals aspiring to build careers in aquaculture and the industry’s workforce development needs, skill requirements, and goals.” MIA will provide funds to support intern opportunities at the host location for an 8-week paid internship (June–August). If the agreed internship partnership and position structure is outside MIA’s standard program timeline, then funding and resources will be specifically determined. The intern, a woman or woman of color with at least a high school or GED education, will work with the host employer during the summer (35 hours per week) to learn aquaculture techniques, assist in farm operations, and develop job skills that contribute to building a diverse and skilled aquaculture workforce in alignment with MIA’s mission.

Interns will be required to complete a final report summarizing their experiences, which may provide valuable insights for the host. Host will be required to complete a post-program survey and other pre-determined materials to provide meaningful insights for MIA as well.

Host Employer Expectations

Hands-On Training: Provide consistent opportunities for the intern during their internship position to actively engage in and learn all aspects and practices of  farm operations. The intern should not be confined to one aspect to ensure they are obtaining a full understanding and education of not only the business, but the overall aquaculture industry. 

Safe and Respectful Environment: Ensure a work environment free from harassment and discrimination, prioritizing the intern’s physical and mental well-being.

Alignment with MIA Values: Support the mission, vision, and values of MIA in all aspects of hosting the internship.

Communication: Maintain regular communication with MIA staff, including Founder and CEO Imani Black, regarding the intern’s progress,  any issues, or concerns.

Visual/Social Content: Host farms are expected to showcase their partnership with MIA and highlight the intern’s contributions through engaging visual and social media content, such as photos and videos of the intern participating in farm activities. Content should align with MIA’s mission to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in aquaculture and may be shared on both the host farm’s and MIA’s platforms to amplify the program’s impact and foster future collaborations.

Compliance and Termination Policy

MIA reserves the right to remove an intern and terminate further involvement with a host farm if the following conditions are not met:

Non-Compliance with Internship Process: Failure to adhere to MIA’s structured internship program structure, including scheduling, reporting, or training expectations.

Misalignment with MIA’s Mission and Values: Actions or policies that do not uphold the mission of bridging workforce gaps for minority individuals, or failure to maintain an inclusive, equitable, and respectful environment.

Safety Protocol Violations: Inadequate measures to ensure the intern's safety and well-being, including insufficient training or neglect of health and hygiene standards.

Unaddressed Misconduct: Inability to appropriately address or resolve issues of discrimination, harassment, or other incidents involving the intern.

In cases of non-compliance, the host farm will be notified, and an investigation will follow. If MIA determines that the host farm has failed to meet its obligations, the partnership may be terminated, and future applications and engagement with Minorities In Aquaculture will be denied.
