Monday Evenings 7-10pm 12 Week course beginning August 5th, 2024 $30 per session

Quilting is a fun and easy craft that not only satisfies your creative urges but you end up with practical items to keep warm with, give as gifts, offer comfort or to just admire on your wall. This class is a practical introduction to patchwork and quilting with each lesson building on the information of the last and using a variety of different techniques to build up your quilting repertoire. Each block we stitch can lend itself to many different quilts.

We will start with the basics of how to prepare and cut your fabric.  Sew an accurate seam, as well as hints and tricks along the way to make your sewing go together nicely. 

At the end of the twelve weeks you will have a large lap size quilt (62”x50”) and the skills to make many more.

For the Class you will need:- 

Fabrics - These would preferably be 100% cotton to begin with as it is easier to work with. 

2 metres of background fabric - this is usually a plainer fabric that will contrast with the feature fabrics to show your designs.

1 metre of patterned feature fabric(s)  This can be one fabric or many for a scrappy look with many different ones. You can rummage in your stash - if you have one. 

1 metre of coordinating fabric.   This is a fabric that can contrast with your patterned fabric. Again you can use more than one fabric. Usually these fabrics have a smaller print or are self coloured to blend and support your feature print. 

1.6 metre of backing fabric - this can be any cotton fabric. Often it coordinates or contrasts with the fabrics used on the front but really anything can be used.

Many quilters struggle with choosing fabrics, so don’t panic.  Come in and we can help you.  

Working Sewing Machine -with manual.

It mainly needs to sew a good straight stitch. If your machine has been sitting in a cupboard for a while it may need a good oiling or maybe even a service. We can do that for you too.

Sewing accessories -

Neutral thread - grey is good.

Thread for quilting - this will match a fabric in your quilt top.  It could be the background fabric or one of your feature fabrics.  We won’t need this thread for the first week or two but it is worth thinking about.

Spare Needles, Fabric scissors, Pins, Seam Remover, Hand sewing needles.

We will have everything else you will need to make your masterpiece.

We only have space for 6 students in each class so to secure your place please fill in the registration form and get it back to us with a deposit of $50.  This can be paid at the shop or by internet banking
