Cleveland Sews PPE Registration
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a societal shift in awareness about public health protocols, resulting in high demand for cloth facial coverings to reduce contagion. The Centers for Disease Control recommends personal use of face coverings while in public, and the Ohio Department of Health recommends the use of face coverings for all Ohioans as COVID cases continue to surge across the state.
The goal of this program is to create 1,000+ masks which will be donated to local community members and nonprofit organizations while providing sewing education programming to community members who will assist in mask making efforts privately or with Cleveland Sews.
Community members can receive educational training via our online Community Hub, which is built to optimize meaningful connections, increase relational health, and reduce social isolation and loneliness. Sessions include weekly check-ins of educational content; discussion of challenges related to assigned tasks; and celebration of achievements due to newly developed skills. Educational content will be available as a prerecorded video for access at anytime. Live online classes begin in February and will run until the end of March. They will rotate between a machine operation class and a class that teaches the mask making. Hand sewing classes will be offered through a 3-week program on Saturdays with the Cleveland Public Library Lorain Branch. The full schedule of class times will be emailed to you after registration.
Participants can opt-in for in-person, socially-distanced training on home sewing machines and/or industrial machine training for advanced sewists.** Once trained, mask kits can be picked up and sewn at home. Once trained, underemployed industrial sewists can earn a wage sewing to help expedite production work as needed. Individuals looking for job placement working in a sewing factory will be referred to community partners for employment opportunities. Masks created through this program can be kept by community members or returned for redistribution through Neighborhood Connections and The Center on Trauma & Adversity. The program creates a ripple effect to inspire new and avid sewists.
** In-person training is subject to Covid numbers and current guidelines.

Cleveland Sews Mission Statement
Cleveland Sews is a workforce development and wealth-building sewing collaborative that stitches together Cuyahoga County’s social fabric, thereby creating jobs, increasing stability, and building hope in community members who have faced hardship due to racial and economic inequities. Through partnership with other community organizations, Cleveland Sews brings together employers, trainers, and apprentices to work collaboratively, bridging vulnerable populations into sustainable work positions within the sewing industry. As we empower individuals through the development of trade skills, Cleveland Sews is revitalizing communities and the sewing industry, itself.
