Dear Friend,

Thank you for your interest in the Back to the Basics Course. Back to the Basics consists of 7 lessons that will solidify and strengthen the foundations of your faith.

If you haven't already watched the  video lesson, you will find the video below.
The PDF Notes for Lesson 6 can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nt_lQdVk_ZjIWtcq1AsFTnPRW1ENfKL7/view?usp=drive_link

To successfully complete each lesson go through both the video below and the pdf notes. The notes begin with a time of reflection followed by the Scriptures used in the video. At the end of the notes are both a guided time of prayer and a self-assessment.

Please do the reflection, look up each Scripture, the prayer time, and the self-assessment. This will help you to get the most out of the Back to the Basics course.

Once you submit your assessment, I will read your assessment and pray for you. For some of you, I may reach out to you via email. My prayer is that this process helps you to live a life full of Jesus while helping others to do the same.

In Christ,

Dr. David John Philips

Reflection

What has God done in your life in the past week? Take some time to thank Him for what He did. (It can’t be generic things like waking up. Thank Him for specifics.)
Prayer...is communication with God. Communication consists of both speaking and listening.

Word: 35 minutes

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
  • Discuss why you can rejoice always and give thanks in all circumstances...
  • Ask: How do we pray without ceasing? Remember prayer is both speaking and listening

Whose prayers does God answer?
James 5:16-18

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Elijah...”
  • Discuss righteousness and Elijah prayers being answered despite being a person just like us.
  • Are your prayers powerful and effective? Why? Can you pray bold prayers like Elijah?

What kind of prayers does God answer?
1 John 5:14-15
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us –whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him”
  • Discuss this amazing promise...
  • How do we know God’s will?
  • Read Hebrews 4:12 (Spirit is from God, the Soul is from our mind, our will, and our emotions)
  • Read and discuss Romans 12:2, Ephesians 5:26, and Hebrews 5:14

Are there prayers that God does not answer?
James 4:2-3
“...You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive because you ask with the wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”
  • When we pray for our will and not God’s will, the prayers are not answered. Discuss and/or give a personal example.
  • Side Note... Read 1 Peter 3:7, James 1:5-8
“The Holy Spirit shows us what to pray for...

1 Corinthians 2:10-12, 16
  • Read and Discuss

The Spirit knows the thoughts of God, and we have the Spirit who is from God!

Prayer: 15 minutes
Prayer is not a formula. It is relationship. (Communication with our Heavenly Father through the Holy Spirit)

1.) Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what you have been blessed with. Pray 1-2 sentence prayers expressing thanks to God for each thing. Minimum 10.

2.) Ask the Holy Spirit to show each person who/what to pray for. Make a list of everyone and everything that comes to mind. Ask Him how to pray for each thing, and then pray for each thing as the Holy Spirit leads.

3.) Is anything specific that you need prayer for.
  • Make a list of each specific thing. Ask your Heavenly Father what His will is for each thing. Then pray what He puts on your heart.
Remember, we are praying this way because there are prayers that God does not answer, selfish prayers.
1. What stood out to you the most in this lesson? Why? *
2. Was there anything that challenged you in this lesson? If so, what was it and how are you going to move forward? *
3. Write out a story of how you have seen God answer a specific prayer. *
If you do not have a story, then begin to pray specific prayers as led by the Holy Spirit. Please email me at drdavidjohnphilipsjr@gmail.com with the story of the answered prayer when it happens. Thank you!
