Week of August 31, 2020: What does Back to School look like for you?
With Labor Day marking the unofficial end of summer, the reality of back to school is upon us.
College campuses and dorms have reopened with different rules - and some college students flouting those rules.
Communities throughout New England are preparing to re-open schools for the first time since March, with in-school, remote and hybrid options. Parents scramble to create a school-work-life balance, with some opting to homeschool.
School supplies such as pencils, notebooks and glue sticks have been replaced with laptops, desks and PPE.
Instead of pictures in the driveway while waiting for the school bus, first day pictures feature pajamas, face masks and home learning set ups.
Start dates have been pushed back in many districts throughout New England, although Connecticut students are returning to the classroom this week and next. Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo is expecting that all districts except Providence and Central Falls will be fully in person by Oct. 13.
Yet some teachers are refusing to enter school buildings due to safety concerns in some districts, and others are expressing anxiety about what the coming year will hold.
“So many people get lost, get up at 3 or 4 in the morning thinking about this, about the worry and the anxiety,” [Hingham Education Association president June Gustafson] said. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen. I don’t think there’s ever been anything like this in my lifetime.”
So what does Back to School look like for you? What option did you choose for your children? What prompted your decision? What did you do for your first day of school pictures?
