New York State faces a maternal health crisis, disproportionately affecting Black and Brown communities, with Black individuals in New York City experiencing a pregnancy-related mortality rate 9.2 times higher than their white counterparts. Driven by structural racism, inequitable access to quality care, and systemic discrimination, this disparity is compounded by rising maternal morbidity and infant mortality rates. To address this, we must prioritize transformative change through streamlined licensure regulations, equitable Medicaid reimbursement, and increased access to person-centered care. By advancing policy reforms and community-driven solutions, we can improve maternal health outcomes, reduce disparities, and empower communities to thrive.
