What is the Brain Bee competition?
The Brain Bee competition is a world-wide neuroscience competition designed for middle and high school students. It is designed to motivate middle school and high school students to learn more about the brain and pursue careers in neuroscience. The competition tests students on their knowledge of the human brain.
Who is eligible to participate in the NCF SfN Brain Bee?
Middle and high school students (ages 13-18) are encouraged to participate in the Brain Bee competition. In addition to showing off all of the cool things you will learn while preparing for the competition, you will also have the opportunity to meet new people and win cool prizes!
How is the competition organized?
The competition is divided into three parts: 1) The local Brain Bee, 2) The National Brain Bee, and 3) The International Brain Bee. All middle school and high school students have the opportunity to participate in a local Brain Bee competition. The winners of the local Brain Bee competitions have the opportunity to participate in the National competition. From there, the winners of the National competition will have the opportunity to participate in the International competition.

Each year, the North-Central Florida Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience (NCF SfN) organization holds a local Brain Bee competition at the University of Florida. Our local Brain Bee competition is held in the Fall Semester, but winners of our local Brain Bee can participate in the following National Competition which is typically held in April.
What is the competition format?
The Brain Bee competition has many formats and may vary each year. The most common format is a live question and answer session where contestants are asked questions and respond with an answer. Other formats may ask for written responses. Nevertheless, all interested participants will be given information about the competition format in advance.
Does the Brain Bee competition cost me anything?
No! Participation in the Brain Bee is free. We will provide you with links to study materials, and we will also offer review sessions for interested participants.

The event is scheduled to take place at the University of Florida, and will be held on Saturday, December 7th, 2024. The NCF SfN organization typically provides small cash prizes for the top three winners. This year, we have the pleasure of aiding the winner of our competition in going to the national competition.
