2020 4-H Renewable Energy Camp Application

Renewable Energy Camp: July 6-10, 2020, Michigan State University
Cost: 4-H youth $280 other youth $300 Fee includes all meals, lodging and materials
Youth ages: 13-15 as of January 1, 2020 with basic knowledge of electricity and who are interested in exploring the application, research and opportunities in the field of solar energy.
The Advanced 4-H Renewable Energy Camp is a five-day pre-college program held at Michigan State University (MSU) that explores ideas, research and opportunities around renewable energy. In 2020 youth will work with Extension Educators at MSU while engaging in a variety of experiences and explorations focused on solar energy.
Youth will visit labs that are conducting cutting edge renewable energy research, renewable energy companies that think outside the box, and farms that are using renewable energy to remain profitable. This interactive camp will engage youth in experiments, questions and conversation focused on the application of solar radiation into electricity. Camp will culminate with teams of youth designing solutions for incorporating solar energy into real-life applications

1) What level of knowledge around electricity and solar energy do you currently have
Basic - I can build a parallel or series circuit and explain where switches should be placed in each circuit.
Intermediate - I have wired and built or modified solar devices like cars, buzzers... I can explain the basics of how solar energy is converted to electrical energy.
Advance - I can explain how solar energy is converted into electrical energy and thermal energy. I can explain why batteries or alternative methods are needed along with solar energy. I can identify some of the reasons the USA has not embraced solar energy.
2) Why do you want to attend the Michigan 4-H Renewable Energy Camp?
3) After Camp how do you plan to use what you have learned to help others, your school and community?
