Letter in Support of UNC-Chapel Hill Graduate Students
An Open Letter to Chancellor Carol Folt, Dean Kevin Guskiewicz, Dean Steve Matson, and the UNC Board of Trustees:

Students are the beating heart of any university worthy of its name, and this means all students, including the graduate and post-undergraduate students who teach, work, and learn in its classrooms, libraries, studios, and lecture halls. Earlier this week, a group of students announced a protest action against the recommendation, by the UNC Board of Trustees, that the monument to Confederate soldiers known as “Silent Sam” be re-erected on the Chapel Hill campus, in a special facility that would cost an estimated $5.3 million to construct and more than $800,000 per year to staff, guard, and maintain. Shortly thereafter, the university administration publicly threatened these students with “serious consequences.” The presence of Silent Sam on our campus constitutes a significant risk to public safety; it is also a symbol of a historical legacy to which many of our students strongly object. We assert that it is the right of these students to protest the construction of such a facility, to object to the use of university and state funds for its construction, and to insist that the university provide a safe environment for teaching and learning to all of its students, undergraduate and graduate alike.

We, the undersigned UNC-Chapel Hill faculty*, support the right of our graduate and post-undergraduate students to speak out against injustice and intolerance in all of its forms, including the proposal put forward by the Board of Trustees. We strongly condemn any act or threat of retaliation made against our students by the UNC-Chapel Hill administration, the Board of Trustees, or the Board of Governors, including but not limited to the expulsion of students, the elimination of student teaching positions, the cancellation of student stipends and benefits, the withdrawal of student scholarships, internal grants, and tuition remissions, and any other penalties that would knowingly hinder them in the continuance of their studies.

Universities must remain places committed to protecting and fostering students, not to suppressing their right to speak freely and to dissent. The trust and confidence of UNC faculty in their university administration is founded upon the expectation that administrators will respond to student concerns in a fair and measured way. We call upon the administration to remember its principles, and to recall that the core values of our university, as they are inscribed on the crest of the university itself, are “light” and “liberty”—the liberty to engage in any and all forms of free thought and expression, and the right to cast light on even the darkest parts of our history. It is the ethical duty of the administration to safeguard these values, and so we urge them not to punish our students for speaking out, and shining new light on Silent Sam.

*Due to widespread public interest, we are now accepting non-UNC-Chapel Hill faculty signatures; please see below.

Signed,
