ALL RESPONSES ARE ANONYMOUS
RSC is a non-hierarchical and autonomous organization that was designed as such to prevent the reproduction of predatory and unequal power dynamics that characterize capitalist social relations. This means that we do not have any formal "leaders," "roles," or "structures" so as to prevent unequal balances of power within the group. (We cannot deny, however, that informal power dynamics may develop and we must mitigate these when possible. Additionally, we are open to creating informal roles to help people who are unfamiliar with such an organization understand how they fit into it.) However, sometimes such an unstructured space can be confusing to navigate, so we feel like establishing a set of community agreements would be helpful.
Community agreements are informal expectations that help establish a mutual understanding between group members. They allow group members to set boundaries for what we see as appropriate behavior. They also help us articulate what kind of space we want RSC to be.
An example of a community agreement is: "This should be a safe space for all marginalized communities, including poor people, disabled people, people of color, queer people, sex workers, undocumented people, etc. Any behavior that excludes marginalized people or makes this space unsafe for them will not be tolerated. We understand that some people may engage in microaggressive behavior and not realize it, so it is important to begin to address such behavior by explaining why and how what they said or did could have been hurtful."
We do not believe in punitive solutions for behavior that contributes to exclusion or harm. We believe in restorative justice, which emphasizes rectifying the harm experienced by the victim as opposed to causing more harm through punishment. Importantly, we also believe in communicating any disagreements directly, as long as those involved feel safe doing so.
