Reef Check Surveyor Application (Whitsundays February 2020)
Thanks for your interest in becoming a Reef Check Surveyor!
Long-term citizen science reef health monitoring is at the core of what we do. As such, this program supports regional capacity building and we are seeking volunteers who live locally and wish to stay involved over multiple survey seasons.
We only offer a limited number of these subsidised PADI certified training courses each year and while we already think you are awesome for wanting to get involved, we cannot accept every applicant. Your application will be reviewed and we'll advise you of the status. Don't worry, there are plenty of additional opportunities to get involved!
PLEASE NOTE: To participate on a Reef Check Australia course, there is a course fee payable upfront of $495 (or with the Early Bird Discount $445!) You must hold an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent, 25 logged dives (including 2 in the past 6 months). To join surveys, you will need at a minimum: A PADI AQF Rescue Diver certification or equivalent, 30 logged dives, current commercial dive medical (AS2299), current gear servicing for BCD and regulator, and access to your own SCUBA gear. You may choose to hold additional dive accident insurance. We will prioritise training for those who are ready to hop in and survey!
The theory portion of the course will be available to you via an online platform once your application has been accepted and the course has been paid for. Time will be spent on Friday 14th Februray to go through any questions you may have following completion of the theory exams.
Training dates include: February 14 (12-6pm) and February 15-16 (full 2 days for in water training).
Location: Theory training is to be conducted at Coral Sea Marina, Airlie Beach. In-water training will be in the Whitsundays region. Operator TBD
