Application Form & Entrance Fee: Please fill out the application form below in its entirety and use the link in the confirmation page to pay your application fee of $25.00. No refunds are available in case of withdrawal or no-show. (The entrance fee entitles students to participate in the Mildred Freiberg Piano Festival at no extra charge.)

COMPETITION GUIDELINES
About the Competition:
We are pleased to announce the 4th Annual Martha B. Sosman Concerto Competition, supported in part by the Martha B. Sosman Fund, by recommendation of Christine Roach. Open to students in grades 12 and under, the competition consists of a preliminary video round followed by an in-person final round. Past First Prize winners are not eligible to compete. Competitors prepare one movement from the repertoire list below and submit an unedited video recording of their performance via YouTube upload. Finalists are chosen in early January and perform their selected piece live for adjudicators on Friday, February 7, 2020. The First Prize winner is awarded a performance with the Powers Youth Orchestra at their Spring Concert on Sunday, May 17, 2020.

Preliminary Round Application Deadline: Received by Friday, January 3, 2020.

Finals Round: Friday, February 7, 2020
• Notification: Applicants will be notified by January 6th if they have been chosen for the Finals Round, to be held the evening of February 7 in Belmont.

Winners Announced: Week of February 10, 2020
• Notification: First and Second Prize winners will be notified by phone and email during the week of February 10. Cash prizes will be awarded following the Powers Youth Orchestra concert in May. Powers reserves the right to not award a First Prize.

Powers Youth Orchestra Spring Concert: Sunday, May 17, 2020
• Performance & Attendance: The First Prize winner will perform their selected piece with the Powers Youth Orchestra. The winner will work with the conductor to decide how much of the concerto will be performed at the live performance. Rehearsal times are listed above – attendance is mandatory at all rehearsals.

All competition applicants must be available on the following dates!
Friday, February 7 (Finals Round); Sunday, May 17 (PYO Spring Concert).
The First Prize winner will rehearse with the Powers Youth Orchestra on April 18 and 25 and May 2, 9, and 16.

2020 Competition Selections:
Contestants must prepare 1 movement from the following repertoire (10 minutes max):
Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major, KV 414
Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 16 in D major, KV 451
Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major, KV 453
Haydn: Piano Concerto in D major, Hob. XVIII:11
Mendelssohn: Piano Concerto in G minor, op. 25
Mendelssohn: Piano Concerto No. 2 in D minor, op. 40
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, op. 15

The First Prize winner will work with the conductor of the Powers Youth Orchestra to decide how much of the concerto will be performed at the live performance in May. Contestants will not be judged on the level of preparedness on the remaining movements beyond the 10-minute selection for the preliminary/final round.
