The Western New York Writing Project (WNYWP) is a site of the National Writing Project, a network of over 200 sites working to advance and improve the teaching of writing in our nation's schools. The WNYWP, hosted by Buffalo State University, aims to create a strong network of teacher-leaders in the Western New York region who will promote and model best practices in the teaching of writing among their colleagues, within their schools.
This week-long summer institute will include workshops and discussion, as well as time for participants to do their own writing and research. After completing the summer institute, we invite participants' continued involvement in WNYWP, through participation in writing/inquiry groups, mini retreats/workshops, and participation in future summer institutes as teacher-leaders. We invite teachers from across the region, at any grade level, with any level of experience who have an interest in and commitment to advancing writing and the teaching of writing.
2023 Summer Institute Details: Our Words in the World: Writing for Change
Date and Time: July 10-14 (Monday-Friday), 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Location: The Buffalo State University Writing Center, E.H. Butler Library, Buffalo State University
Content: During the week, we will focus on both our practice as teachers and our work/research as writers and teachers of writing. Mornings will consist of interactive, hands-on workshops, focused on classroom practice. We will focus in particular on the ways that teachers and students can use writing to create change in their classrooms and communities. In the afternoons, we will write; participants will have opportunities (both individually and collectively) to apply and practice concepts and techniques from the workshops and to work on their own ongoing writing/research. The week will end with a celebration in which we share with each other the words and ideas we generated throughout the week.
Facilitators will include WNYWP directors and Buffalo State faculty Katherine Macro, Maggie Herb, and Hilary Lochte, as well as local teacher-leaders who have previously completed the Summer Institute.
Registration Cost: $100 for professionals and $25 for teacher candidates.
Registration cost will cover daily lunch, light refreshments, and texts/materials for the week. Participants will also earn a digital badge to certify their completion of the institute and are eligible for 30 CTLE hours.
