Pataphysics Playwriting Workshop: Quiara Alegría Hudes' The Selves
The Flea Theater is now accepting applications for a new Pataphysics Writing Workshop, Quiara Alegría Hudes’ “The Selves” on March 15 and 18.

The Pataphysics Playwriting Workshops at The Flea Theater are intimate, intensive sessions for new work and new ways of working. Named for Alfred Jarry’s science of imaginary solutions, the workshops are a gymnasium for the writing brain—curious, particular, and rigorous.

Quiara Alegría Hudes' plays and musicals include the Broadway hit In the Heights, winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical; Water By the Spoonful, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue, a Pulitzer Finalist; and most recently, Miss You Like Hell at the Public Theatre. Her work has been produced around the world.

The focus of this workshop is The Selves, and it is a non-playwriting sandbox/mud bath for playwrights. Content and material will focus on the autobiographical, secret, unspoken, wildly subjective and ridiculously personal, and is absolutely neither project-based nor product-oriented. Frank, banal, strange, witchy, mischievous, earthbound, airborne, ancestral, material, spiritual, and everyday energies & curiosities will be engaged. Intended for the self-curious and multi-selved human creatures. (We will do some playwriting stuff, too.)

This workshop will be held on Friday, March 15 and Monday, March 18 at The Flea Theater in Tribeca. Each session will run from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, with an hour for lunch. Acceptance to the Workshop is by application. Each Workshop is limited to 12 writers, and the course costs $250 with a limited number of partial scholarships available.

To apply for this Pataphysics Workshop, please submit a cover letter expressing your interest in the course, a writing sample of 10 continuous pages, and a resume. Because the workshop includes playwriting and non-playwriting exercises, please briefly describe your interests beyond theater in your cover letter. A paragraph will do. If you would like to be considered for a partial need-based scholarship, please indicate that in your application.

Please submit all of your materials as one PDF titled “FirstnameLastnameHUDES”

Applications are due by 11:59 pm, Sunday, January 27th, 2019.
Applicants will be notified of their status by February 19th.
Payment is due by March 8th, with payment plans available upon request.
