Volunteer Positions - Descriptions
Below is a description of regular volunteer positions at the festival this year. After you have read through the descriptions, use the space below to select your first, second, third, and fourth position preferences.

FESTIVAL AMBASSADORS: The role for the volunteer who’s up for nearly anything! Primary role is to answer questions about the festival and guide visitors between venues near the tent village. Ambassadors also fill in any of the listed positions (except for Drivers) around the festival when needed. This position requires volunteers to be highly mobile and travel between screening venues on foot or by van.

THEATER CREW: Assist at a screening venue by greeting patrons, answering questions, scanning tickets and passes, ushering and helping tidy between screenings as needed.

TECH CHECKERS (Certain qualifications required): Work with filmmakers before and during screenings to ensure quality picture and sound presentation. Act as communication liaison between filmmaker and projectionist. SOME KNOWLEDGE OF FILM PRESENTATION (including digital) AND BASIC TECHNICAL VOCABULARY NECESSARY. Audio/visual professionals encouraged to apply. (Works on a 6 hour shift and receives Captain-level benefits)

TENT VILLAGE STAFF: Help make the tent village the happy center of the festival by answering patrons’ questions, directing foot traffic, keeping the area tidy and assisting the Event Manager with additional events that may occur in either Tent Village or our satellite panel space at Red Emma's. Those able to lift heavy objects and having knowledge of electrical work encouraged to apply.

FRIENDS OF THE FESTIVAL SALES TEAM: Help sell "Friend of the Festival" memberships and answer questions in the festival tent village. Must be outgoing. Sales experience a plus.

DRIVERS: (Certain qualifications required) Drive cargo vans around campus to assist Event Manager and operational staff in hauling materials and delivering necessities to sites on the festival campus. Volunteers interested in being a driver must have a clean driving record and valid insurance to participate. We will not be providing shuttle services to filmmakers this year.

FILMMAKER/VIP LOUNGE STAFF: Assist with maintaining the Filmmaker/VIP lounge by maintaining supplies, tidying up and providing excellent hospitality to guests in the lounge.

CLOSING NIGHT AFTER PARTY HELP: Help transform the tent village into an entertaining space. Provide hospitality at the after party. Bartenders and those with event, food service, or catering experience encouraged to apply.

If you choose one of the box office positions or merchandise table staff position described below, you must fill out the brief set of questions farther down the application.

MERCHANDISE TABLE STAFF: Sell festival merchandise and answer questions. Customer service or sales experience a plus.

BOX OFFICE TELLERS*: Sell tickets for festival programs, answer questions about the festival and accurately record ticket sales. Tellers work in shifts at the Parkway box office or at screening venues. Must be friendly, comfortable with technology, and have customer service and POS/cash handling experience. *(If you choose one of the box office positions you must fill out the brief set of questions farther down the application. May include additional training.)

CALL CENTER REP: Answer incoming calls to the festival and direct customers on how to purchase tickets to festival programs. Must be friendly, a good communicator and have customer service/call center experience.

Box Office/Merchandise Qualifications

Festival Set Up & Breakdown
We can use plenty of help with setting up the festival tent village or breaking down the festival and cleaning up. Volunteers helping set up or breakdown can still serve in other positions at the festival. Check the box below each description if you can help before or after the festival.
Assist in the construction of tent village the first day of the festival; Those who have knowledge of electrical work encouraged to apply. REQUIRES EXTENDED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. MUST BE ABLE TO MOVE POTENTIALLY HEAVY OBJECTS. Volunteers in this role will receive an extra screening voucher!
After the festival, help with breakdown and clean-up. REQUIRES EXTENDED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. MUST BE ABLE TO MOVE POTENTIALLY HEAVY OBJECTS. Help during this shift and get an extra benefit after you volunteer - a Friends of the Festival membership, single level!
Street Team Volunteer Positions
Street team volunteers come to the festival office in the weeks before the festival and pick up posters and postcards to distribute around the Baltimore-D.C. metropolitan area. Street team volunteers get the chance to earn their vouchers ahead of the festival! Vouchers will be determined by the amount of poster and postcards distributed by each volunteer. Street team volunteers are welcome to still help in other roles during the festival.

Captain Positions
The organizational positions described below require the commitment of a 6-8 hour shift. Volunteers in these roles receive 3 vouchers for every 6 hour shift served or 4 vouchers for every 8 hour shift served. Approval for these positions may require a brief interview and prior experience in the area served. Captains assist paid staff with essential tasks and, except where otherwise noted, work with and guide volunteers in their area to provide outstanding customer service. Check the box below the descriptions for the positions you are interested in.
Based in the tent village, this captain maintains and helps assure even distribution of food and other supplies designated to be delivered to venues across the festival.
Assists in coordinating excellent customer service at screening venues. Fills in with staffing needs at venues when necessary and supports venue manager as needed. People filling this position need to be able to travel by foot between venues when necessary. Previous festival experience preferred. Must be comfortable with technology, customer service and POS/cash handling experience desirable. (Reports to venue managers. Shifts based at different screening venues.)
Checks volunteers in and out of shifts and answers or relays questions. Maintains the volunteer lounge. (Reports to Volunteer Coordinator.)
Assists the Filmmaker/VIP Lounge Concierge with maintaining the lounge space by organizing supplies, tidying up and generally providing excellent hospitality to guests in the lounge. (Reports to Filmmaker/VIP Lounge Concierge)
