2019 Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema Call for Entry Form
Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema seeks short films or videos in all genres, in which: 1) local residents participated in any aspect of production or distribution, or 2) the subject matter or theme resonate with current sentiments, issues and challenges facing the neighborhood and residents of Bernal Heights. Films selected for screenings will be presented at the 16th annual summer series of free screenings in local parks, playgrounds and open spaces in early September, 2019.

OUR THEME: Honoring the theme, "Remembering Red Hill and Bernal's Political Voice," Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema seeks films that reflect the many voices and influences that created and continue to impact this community. Until the 1906 earthquake, Bernal remained largely undeveloped until refugees from the city moved into earthquake shacks on Precita Park. During World War II, the area saw another population surge. The new arrivals included many African-American families who worked at the nearby San Francisco Naval Shipyard at Hunters Point.

During the Vietnam War, the neighborhood was known as "Red Hill" for the anti-war activists in shared households and collectives who moved in among the working-class families of Bernal Heights. By the 1990s, Bernal's pleasant microclimate, small houses and freeway access to the peninsula and Silicon Valley led to a third wave of migration. Despite the changing demographic, Bernal retains its reputation as a community of activists and independent thinkers.

SUBMISSIONS CRITERIA AND PROCESS: Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema seeks shorts of all genres including: documentary, narratives, animation, children’s, experimental and music videos. Works-in-progress are also accepted. We encourage content for all-age audiences (G-rated) to insure the largest audience and accessible screening date and time.

Upon the deadline for submissions, the Submissions & Selection Committee reviews all completed entries based on production values, themes, intended audience, length and any association with Bernal Heights. Additionally, the Committee, selects and votes on three awards among all entries:

"Best of Bernal" – awarded to the best film produced by a Bernal-based filmmaker
"Spirit of Bernal" – awarded to the best film produced by a non-resident filmmaker
"Bright Star" – awarded to a young/emerging filmmaker with high promise of future films

All selected films/videos submitted directly to Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema are eligible for the "Good Life Audience Award," voted on by audience members.

Filmmakers will be notified by the second week of August, 2019, if their selection will screen in this season's schedule with the time and date.
Submission deadline: EXTENDED TO July 12, 2019
