This year, the Royal Society of Biology has provided grant funding to enable Jon Hale, Beaulieu Convent School, Wellington Road, St Helier, Jersey JE2 4RJ, to coordinate and run a Spelling Bee for Biology Week 2024. The competition is open to all UK and Channel Islands’ students aged between 11-19 in all educational settings.
Please note - Students need to be signed up to take part by their teachers and cannot apply to take part by themselves.
Literacy is a key factor in an individual’s success in Science exams and during a pupil’s journey with learning science they encounter a huge number and variety of new words. These words may not be commonly used outside of science classrooms and so pupils may get fewer opportunities to practise accurate spelling of science words.
The event is fully adaptable to support your students and maximise uptake. You will be provided with a list of words for students to practise. From this list, twenty words will be randomly selected for each age category. Students will be expected to write down these words for the qualifiers (best in year group).
After qualification, the finalists will say their spellings, like a proper spelling bee, against the clock.
In the event of a tie-break across the lands (UK & Channel Islands), unseen words will be selected for spellings.
Full rules and running suggestions will be emailed to teachers after sign-up closes on 16 September 2024. It does not require specialist teachers to be involved. If you have any questions, please contact Jon Hale halej@beaulieu.jersey.sch.uk
Good luck.
